I first heard LA's Eliminators on Tri-Surf Records' Planet Surf CD. Since then, I've played "Bone Cruncher" umpteen times on Surf's Up! A few months back I saw them in Santa Cruz, and I was completely blown away! They were very powerful, authentic as hell, played gorgeous vintage equipment (drool), and had a delivery like none since the Original Surfaris! Joe Kurkowski plays a killer lead, Preston Wilson plays a great rhythm guitar, Frank Hughes plays a solid surf bass, Doug Harlow plays his brand new drums, and Billy Swanson is the best vintage surf sax player I've heard in years, and I usually don't like horns at all, save for Steve Douglas' classic surf squonks on songs like "Banzai Washout." They understand the genre like guys who were there in '62, and they play like guys who are in a major hurry to pummel their audience. Incredibly powerful, masterfully performed genuine surf for the 90's and beyond! There is no more perfect an example of a vintage surf band recorded in the 90's! - amazon

Masters Of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Vol 1
Various Artists
Dancing Cat Records 1995

Info on Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar: http://www.dancingcat.com/shorthist.php
Hawaiian music can mean many things - anything from old steel guitar to contemporary "Jawaiian" music. Out of all the genres of Hawaiian music however, slack key guitar is probably the most accessible to those unfamiliar with any type. Simply put, slack key is a unique form of tuning and playing acoustic guitar - often with gorgeous results!
This collection of songs from Hawaii's most famous living slack key guitar artists is some of the most beautiful and relaxing music you may ever hear. Listening to each song, it is hard to believe that only one person is playing - each artist has a unique technique of playing both bass and melody at the same time.
If I were trapped on a desert island with the choice of only one CD, this would probably be the one I would choose. One final note - this CD contains excellent liner notes as well, which makes it is the perfect intro to slack key information-wise as well as musically. -- Amazon.com
This is true Sunday morning music. On a cool, crisp Sunday morning nothing goes better than a cup of strong black coffee, a fresh deli croissant, the Boston Globe sports page, and Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar. This is music that can be unobtrusivly in the background providing the perfect Sunday ambiance or music to concentrate upon and study the amazing technique of each individual guitarist.
I must confess that in the 70s I bought some Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar thinking of grass skirts, Hawaiian guitars, and gay Hawaiian beach boys. To my surprise I was treated to some of the most beautiful guitar music I have ever heard.
The production values and sound quality throughout are superb. Perfect Sunday morning music. Aloha. -- JohnnyDiego

For the month of March 1970 I managed a record store near the San Diego State University campus. It was a month of daily fun for me as I was in charge of deciding which records to stock and sell (not to mention the nubile coeds who were daily visitors.) Raw Sienna was a daily play for me over the store's music system but somehow I never bought it myself after I was let go from the store. Why was I terminated? The owner's nephew just returned from Viet Nam and needed a job. What better way for me to serve my country than to leave the best job I ever had in my entire life.
Thank you for the share. The memories should come flooding back.
we're not on FB but I like your comment JD, because it's exactly what it is about Music, it's a time tunnel where it's easy to move. As you see, my english is not improving...

Loveley music of old Hawaii. I bought this used CD yesterday, synchronicity really exists :-)
Bob Brozman & Ledward Kaapana - Kika Kila Meets Ki Ho'Alu
http://www.discogs.com/Bob-Brozman-Ledward-Kaapana-Kika-Kila-Meets-Ki-HoAlu/release/5715624
This is one of the better and livelier entries in Dancing Cat's extensive slack-key guitar series, for reasons of variety alone. The title of the album is roughly translated as Hawaiian acoustic steel meets slack-key, and the disc, logically, is comprised of duets between steel player Brozman and slack guitarist Kaapana. Brozman, noted as both a Hawaiian-style steel virtuoso and archivist of vintage Hawaiian recordings, tends to dominate the arrangements, with Kaapana acting more as a second foil. Brozman goes for a circa 1920 sound, reminiscent of the time when the Hawaiian guitar was in transition from its purely acoustic origins to the louder sound created by resonator guitars. The pair mostly cover Hawaiian songs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, often from early Hawaiian recording artists such as Tau Moe, Sol Hoopii, and Kalama's Quartet. -Allmusic

The first record album that I bought with my own money was The Bobby Darin Story on ATCO in 1961. Since then Bobby has been filling my record, CD, and iPod shelves. As an aside, some years ago I gave away almost my whole vinyl collection (The Bobby Darin Story included) to a 15 year old kid who was into Hi-Fi and was building his own system using a kit his father had bought for him. Tubes and all. The other kids called him a nerd, among other things. I called him the coolest cat around.
Thanks for the share. It should fill some gaps.
@Johnny Diego,
I attended SDS in '70. Which record store did you work at? There were so few at the time, I can probably guess which one but I'll be damned if I can remember the name of it :-)
Thanks RYP for more surf and Johnny D for Hawaiian guitars and your stories !
Good sun for a sunday !
...and this is my sunshine ray :
Prince Buster is one of the most important figures in Jamaican Ska and Rocksteady.
The man who in 1960, took local calypso and the infamous students of Alpha Boy's School
such as Roland Alphonso, Don Drummond and blended them with the r&b and southern blues sounds of the USA.
In doing so created an authentic expression of both Jamaican and world music.
The hi-tempo ska he pioneered in the dancehalls of Kingston during the early 60s, is where reggae as we know it all began.
Prince Buster IS 'the ska beat' and through 1963-1969 defined the sound with over a dozen quintessential ska and rocksteady albums
(undergroundundercovered.blogspot.fr)
A very well detailed discography can be found here, thanks to Marco Weststar:
http://reggaediscography.blogspot.fr/2014/09/prince-buster-discography-skarocksteady.html
If you're not familiar with Prince Buster music, I recommend "Prince Buster on Tour",
of the best live albums ever recorded, not for the sound quality but for the performance quality.
It's groovy and frantic from the beginning to the end !
All tracks are mp3 from CD rip.
I just want to specify that the 2 albums "Judge Dread" and "She was a rough rider"
contains a few tracks which were difficult to extract
( I think those cds has been playing on my radio car and exposed to some hot temperatures for a too long time...
but summer is the best time for listening to that stuff ! ).
So some tracks are a little bit "noisy", even after a masterisation in audio cleanic.
As it's very difficult to find Prince Buster original albums nowadays, I share them anyway,
but if someone owns a better quality, thanks for posting.
And Of course all albums missing in my today list are welcome in these pages.

Damned if I can remember the name of that store either but it was right off campus, but not on El Cajon Blvd. I had moved back to San Diego in February 1970, attended the very first Earth Day in Balboa Park, tried to get a job as a Milkman, but my hair was too long, then with my musical partner and our wives moved to Boulder, Colorado in September. From there the saga continued.
Thank you RYP for The Eliminators, April March, plus all the Jon & Nightriders records. Also, the OV Wright --that is an amazing set! So much good stuff from everyone here lately (as usual)! Thanks to all
All right new surf, Thank You RYP

Seamav Thanks for all the Dave Walker the past week. Loved his voice on Street Corner Talkin' LP.
Johnny Diego, Thanks for the slack key guitar CD.
@Johnny Diego,
Much relieved to know you can't remember either . . . so it's not just *me* and *my* memory that's gone to shit :-) But I'm still in touch with a friend from that era who from all indications is mentally a good deal sharper than I am. I bet he'll be able to rattle off the names of a few shops. I'll get back to you on that.
I bought Sgt. Pepper the day it was released in a shop that was, I believe, off College in a small strip center. The owner was so excited to be the first shop in SD to have the LP. Also picked up a promo copy of Gilded Palace of Sin at the same shop [still one of my all time favorites -- much more so than Sgt. Pepper]. Later. . . .
@Jc Ork,
Thanks for the Prince Buster ups. Much appreciated!
I have 200%-600% Dynamite! Did I miss 100% Dynamite?
Thanks for Buster.
Thank you RYP, JohnnyD, very slack and nicely tagged, Jc Ork Busterful.
I too am anonymous.
@Johnny Diego,
Was it possibly Soundsville [in a small strip mall off College]? I consulted a friend and that's the only shop we were able to come up with.
Thanks foor all the great post... any chance for: Eliminators – Ultra Sonic?
Cheers P.
rontokyo --
That was 45 years ago. I grew up in Point Loma so I really knew nothing about the college district and didn't go back to school until the late 70s, and then it was in Massachusetts. All I remember was that I was in charge of a staff of 3 besides myself. The store owner was a guy who tried to push me to sell cheap-shit stereo consoles because the markup was so great. I never sold one because I didn't want to rip off anybody. I only worked there a month before his nephew came back from the war and I was all too glad to do my part for my country by getting away from that money grubbing rip-off artist. The people, the music, and the customers were great but the owner drove me nuts because he was a dickhead.
Ask your friend if any dickheads owned record shops in the area and he'll probably tell you that they all did.
dear Ryp
have you got by chance The eliminators Ultra Sonic Surf guitar and Roon to Move and think of post them in next future?
if you haven't got them i could post it

THANK YOU for the Prince Buster megapost!
For JohnnyDiego and Rontokyo: In addition to Soundsville at the corner of College and El Cajon Blvd. there was also Discount Records on College just under the walking bridge to SDSU. I think they moved across the street into the little mini-mall at Montezuma and College. (I bought my copy of Who's Next when it came out at that location.) I was born in 1960 but had a hip older brother, so my tastes were advanced for my age. I used to get my haircut at the barbershop next to Soundsville and my Mom would take me next door afterwards and get me an album. By a stroke of luck one of those times was the day the White Album was released, so I got it the day it came out (and have been bragging ever since.) The number on the jacket is either in 25,000s or 26,000s. By the way, if you are still in SD, I ended up owning a chain of three indie record stores from 1985 - 2002, including one that was right next to the red brick mall that the Soundsville was in.
Thanks for the memories!
Phil
hi jc ork, thanks for the re up of the buster cd.the rocka shocka comps never seem t appear much but they are first class and well worth hunting down,im afraid the ones I have are not very good quality and I have no covers or tracklists with them or I would upload them to here.thanks again.
