* Essential Traditional Americana
* 113 tracks. 30 Previously Unreleased.
* Co - produced by multiple Grammy-winner Christopher King

Tompkins Square invites you to check out the new box set from our friends at County Records. County has long been one of our favorite labels, so we are sharing their information with the press community in the hope that you will want to cover this monumental set. This treasure belongs in every traditional music fan's collection, right next to Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music.

'Legends of Old-Time Music' is a deluxe 4-CD box set containing one hundred thirteen old-time performances recorded for County Records from the 1960s to the 1990s.

Originally issued primarily on LP, most of these tracks have never been released on CD. Thirty of the tracks are previously unissued and heard for their very first time in this edition. Collected and recorded by Charlie Faurot, Bobby Fulcher, Rich Nevins, Barry Poss and others, these performances are among the very best old-time recordings made by "true-vine" musicians. Legendary performers include: John Ashby, E.C. Ball, Fred Cockerham, Kyle Creed, Tommy Jarrell, Clark Kessinger, Steve Ledford, Hiram Stamper, Wade Ward, Melvin Wine and many others.

This set contains a 28-page booklet with notes by Kinney Rorrer, annotations by the late Charlie Faurot and Kinney Rorrer, several
unpublished photos of musicians, and essays.

BONUS 2 OF 6 (Pt. 1)

Rare & Red Hot Gospel 1926-1951 (Catfish CD)

Like the Columbia/Legacy four-CD box set Roots & Blues: The Retrospective 1925-1950, Catfish's Rare & Red Hot Gospel is a racially integrated anthology of historic recordings, in this case drawn from the years 1926-1951. Concerns over degrees of skin pigmentation and possible African ancestry have always been topics of consuming interest in the United States and in Britain, where this little collection was produced. White musicians in the lineup are identified in the liner notes as Alfred G. Karnes, who was recorded in Bristol, Tennessee in 1927; Dock Walsh, who made his record in Memphis in 1929, and the brothers Howard and Dorsey Dixon, who cut "Easter Day" in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1936. Artists who are represented with more than one selection are Arizona Dranes, Blind Joe Taggart, and Blind Roosevelt Graves, who with his brother Uaroy and pianist Cooney Vaughn made hokum records with the Mississippi Jook Band. The producers of this collection were careful to select the one recording by Rev. Edward W. Clayborn that stands out from the rest of his work. His "Death Is Only a Dream", which is performed as a waltz, was a favorite of Hank Williams who, however, does not appear to have recorded it himself. The song was interpreted by the Stanley Brothers and the Blue Sky Boys. Elder Charles Beck's version of "Drinking Shine" (also commonly known as "God Don't Like It") may be compared with interpretations by Rev. Anderson Johnson and Blind Willie McTell. Although "Oh Death," as sung by Charley Patton and Bertha Lee, bears only a topical and emotional resemblance to "Oh Death" as recorded years later by Georgia Sea Island folk singer Bessie Jones, the two songs share the same cultural taproots and inescapable subject matter. "I Belong to the Band, Hallelujah" is one of several excellent records cut in 1935 by Rev. Blind Gary Davis. Considerably less famous than Davis was Blind Willie Harris, whose recording "Does Jesus Care?" was waxed in 1929 in New Orleans. For those who thrive on data of this nature, Willie Mae Williams who recorded "Don't Want to Go There" in Philadelphia in 1949, is believed to have also operated under the name of Richard Rabbit Brown. Two vocal groups found their way into this variegated collection. The Silver Leaf Quartet hailed from the gospel-rich region around Norfolk, Virginia. The Heavenly Gospel Singers, who cut their record in Rock Hill, North Carolina, were actually based in Detroit. Noteworthy highlights of instrumentation on Rare & Red Hot Gospel include the (possibly home-built) dulceola operated by Washington Phillips; Luther Magby's accordion; Rev. Utah Smith's electrically amplified guitar, and the "sacred steel" sound of Brother Willie Eason, whose "I Want to Live So That God Can Use Me" serves as an effective closer for this highly recommended gospel collection. Dan Baird & Homemade Sin - Get Loud '15

Nashville’s finest return with arguably their most complete album to date. Comprising ex-Georgia Satellites frontman and chief songwriter Dan Baird, fellow ex-Satellite and drummer extraordinaire Mauro Magellan, Americana Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Warner E. Hodges, probably best known as co-founder of ground breaking alt.country rockers Jason & The Scorchers, the line-up is completed by new boy and former Bonafide bassist Micke Nilsson. The album takes a glorious romp through Baird’s lyrical landscape of rural America and its characters, musically harking back to a time when music was fun and albums were designed to be listened to as a whole . With individual tracks evoking the spirit and attitude of early ‘70s Stones, The Band and The Heartbreakers amongst others. Always tipping the hat but never derivative. (Hundred Records)

Thanks to the amazing G-man for the fine County Records collections. Spent a memorable day in Floyd, Virginia long ago, much of the time in the County Records basement poking through the cutouts. Great little town, great big music. All good wishes, G.

Thank you Gyro and RYP for the Nasty Rockabilly series. Of course my wife walked in right when I had the cover of one of the CD's right on my screen.

There has been a lot of amazing shares on TZ in the last couple of months. A huge nod of gratitude to all involved (especially RYP & Gyro for keeping this thing top-notch every single day).

PS - I think something might be wrong with the Dean Beard collection; the zippy file comes out as 0 mb.

Thanks again!

The old time music box from Country Records is a great release. I always had a lot of respect for the way they did things and the artists they chose to record. Can't wait to give it a listen. I think I'll dig out some of old County LPs too.

Gyro, thanks for the Dean Beard! Any chance you or someone has a copy of 'You Don't Have To Go Home, But You Can't Stay Here'? It was a single about 1974 or 1975 by Dean Beard.

Oh, my, my. The gospel offerings of "Rare And Hot Gospel" and "In The Storm So Long" take this music to a whole 'nuther level! What glorious collections. The title song "In The Storm So Long" is funkier than anything that ever tried to be funky. The other songs on both offerings are also in another stratosphere! Thank you with joy in my heart. Dean Beard - Rock Around The Town @320

BEARD, DEAN (1935–1989). Dean Beard, rockabilly pioneer, was born in Santa Anna, Texas, on August 31, 1935, the son of Raymond and Opal (Baker) Beard. He was sometimes called the "West Texas Wild Man" because of his frantic stage presence and piano-playing style.
Beard, a lifelong resident of Coleman County, moved to Coleman in 1953 and graduated from Coleman High School. While in high school he started doing session work in Abilene for Key City media mogul and record producer Slim Willetqv. He briefly attended Tarleton State College but soon opted to pursue a music career. He made his first recordings in 1955 in Abilene with the Fox Four Sevens. The same year he shared the stage with Elvis Presley whose star was rising. The two became friends, and they spent a day together in Coleman where Presley's Cadillac created quite a stir.
Intent on duplicating Presley's success, Beard cut two demo sessions in Memphis for Sun Records in 1956, but Sam Phillips decided not to sign him. One of the demos was "Rakin' and Scrapin'," which Beard recorded again the next year in Abilene for Willet's Edmoral label. His popular West Texas band, Dean Beard and the Crew Cats, included area teenagers Jimmy Seals and Dash Crofts, who later became a successful pop duo. A tenor sax- and piano-driven pounder, "Rakin' and Scrapin'," was leased to Atlantic Records for national distribution but failed to break out. A high energy follow-up on Atlantic, "Party Party," suffered a similar fate.
In 1958 Beard, along with Seals and Crofts, joined the Champs (of "Tequila" fame) and journeyed to the West Coast. After recording several sessions with the group for Challenge Records, he was fired and returned to Texas in 1959. Beard continued to record for Willet and then for a variety of other small labels throughout the 1960s. He remained a popular live act into the 1970s, despite having to battle crippling arthritis, the results of an auto accident that broke his back. He died in Coleman on April 4, 1989. He was honored by induction into the West Texas Music Hall of Fame.
