"Texas Gospel" Vol. 8 Pay Day 1955-1960

This double set starts out with the final gospel singles issued on the Duke subsidiary with the Ward Singers, Paramount Singers, etc. then takes us through the Peacock Gospel singles catalog from "What a friend" by the Dixie Hummingbirds in early 1959 to "Sending up my timber" by the Five Blind Boys of Miss (end of 1960) with singles featuring the Brooklyn All Stars, Sister Barbara Jones, Gospelaires, Gospel Consolators, Sensational Nightingales, Spirit of Memphis, Sunset Travelers, Pilgrim Jubilees. Mighty Clouds of Joy and others along the way. The rest of the best. (Deep Roots Magazine)Back in stock. More superb gospel - mostly from Peacock along with a number of tracks from Peacock's parent label Duke. The Duke sides are from around 1955 and includes four sides by the superb West Coast group The Paramount Singers, two of them featuring the wonderful lead vocals of Vance "Tiny" Powell , and six splendid and obscure sides by Clara Ward and The Ward Singers. The Peacock sides are from 1959/60 and includes eleven superb sides by The Gospelaires - a group that was popular at the time but is not very well known today - their sides feature the gorgeous lead vocals of Robert Washington. Peacocks most well known groups - The Dixie Hummingbirds, Five Blind Boys Of Mississippi, Sensational Nightingales and Spirit Of Memphis are all here with great sides and includes the Peacock debut of the wonderful Mighty Couds Of Joy with lead vocalist Joe Ligon who were to become one of the label's most popular groups in the 1960s. Other artists includes The Sunset Travelers featuring furture soul giant O.V. Wright, The Brooklyn All Star Singers, Pilgrim Jubilee Singers and others and the set ends with a rousing sermon recorded live from Rev. W.C. Trammell. Volumes 3/4/5 and 6/7 in this great series are now out of print and since this is a limited edition too don' delay if you want this great selection of black gospel music - most of it making its first appearance on CD> (FS) (Roots & Rhythm)

You know Dan Wilson from his bands Tripshakespeare and Semisonic (both will be posted later this week). This is his second solo album. I do not have his first, Free Life, but I am sure someone here in the TwilightZone has it. If so, please share.

Thanks for including the notes from Louis Opal Nations. To save me time from scanning them, I was going to include them in the DL folder from this site - but I forgot. Not many people even know about Vol. 8&9 in this series - this was a hard collection to find before it sold out quickly.

Dear Sirs, The Texas Gospel series has been more than could be hoped for. What a delight to receive these rare and precious compilations! This is, indeed, a magical site, but we know a great deal of work goes into keeping it magnificent. Thank you is such a small phrase for what you do. With appreciation, Lil'Ol'Lady

The ongoing outpouring of gospel and soul is deeply appreciated. Thanks to Gyro, Jillem, Northern Madman, Johnny D and everybody else involved for this treasury. Also, thanks to Opal Nations whose scholarship and continuing reissue series bring an entirely new audience to vintage gospel.
