This high-water mark by the band finds them softening their rougher edges and stretching out into jazz territory, yet still retaining a blues foundation. There's not a bad cut here, with enough variety (bottleneck slide, acoustic guitar, horns, and strings) to warrant frequent late-night listenings. "A Hard Way to Go," "Needle and Spoon," and "Stay While the Night Is Young" are especially strong, as are two instrumental numbers. Unfortunately, leader Kim Simmonds lost his greatest asset when vocalist Chris Youlden quit for an ill-fated solo career after this recording. Youlden had one of the most distinctive voices in British blues, and Savoy would never fully recover from his exit.(AllMusic Review by Peter Kurtz)

Magic --
For the month of March 1970 I managed a record store near the San Diego State University campus. It was a month of daily fun for me as I was in charge of deciding which records to stock and sell (not to mention the nubile coeds who were daily visitors.) Raw Sienna was a daily play for me over the store's music system but somehow I never bought it myself after I was let go from the store. Why was I terminated? The owner's nephew just returned from Viet Nam and needed a job. What better way for me to serve my country than to leave the best job I ever had in my entire life.
Thank you for the share. The memories should come flooding back.
I have all LPs and CDs by Savoy Brown. Any particular request, just ask.

Thank you for the Savoy Brown - Looking From The Outside. I'm also enjoying the vinyl rip of Raw Sienna. Appreciate it -
How about Street Corner Talking? many thanks.
Simply cruising by to send Gyro, Ryp, Jillem, and everyone else a special thank you for that rare and marvelous "Texas Gospel" series. What a treat! There is great music shared here, but the gospel was truly something precious. Thank you. Lil'Ol'Lady
Thanks
I saw Savoy Brown in the 60's at the London School of Economics. Don't really remember much except the low ceiling. Strange what memory does.
I have all of Chris' solo recordings, but have yet figured out how/where to upload the files. Would love to share. Perhaps mr. moderator could give me a heads up?
I know how to use dropbox.
imnokid, do you mean Chris Youlden? I have posted his 3 solo albums not so long ago.
Yes, I mean Chris Youlden. My one problem with everyone posting links to other things in the comments, is that I do not open every commentary and the search engine does not go to the comments, so I am sure I have missed some great things.
This is one of the very beat blogs on the net!
Tanx for Savoy Brown!
I saw Savoy Brown two weeks ago in Denver. They did "Hard Way To Go" and Kim Simmonds introduced it as, "This one's for Chris". Last time I checked--about a year ago--Youlden was playing guitar in a third rate blues band in the UK. You can look that up on EweTube. His playing was undistinguished, and someone else was fronting the band. So sad. A great voice, and a great lyricist lost to heroin, or so it has been rumored.
Raw Sienna remains the pinnacle of Savoy Brown's career. The best songs, and the best performances. If you don't have, git it!
