With Pay Day 1955-1960, gospel scholar Opal Louis Nations continues to mine the Houston-based Duke/Peacock vaults for Golden Era goodies. This latest two-CD set focuses on the latter half of the 1950s, as the quartet revolution, which dominated the gospel scene from the late 1940s, was beginning to give way to piano-led groups and large gospel choruses. While Peacock was still considered the most significant quartet label--you were somebody if your group was on Peacock--Pay Day uses a chronological lens to show how Don Robey couldn't disregard the slow shift in listener preferences. Thus, in addition to Gospelaires and Five Blind Boys discs on Peacock, Robey released singles by Clara Ward and the enigmatic Chora'leers on his Duke subsidiary. Check out the Sister Barbara Jones selections if, for no other reason than to marvel at Jones' otherworldly shouts. Still, quartets remained Peacock's bread and butter, and Pay Day makes available such superb performances as Roscoe Robinson's lead on the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi's "Sending Up My Timber," the Sensational Nightingales' powerful "Over in Zion," and the Gospelaires' gut-wrenching workout "If I Could Hear My Mother Pray Again." The set also includes the first Peacock releases by the Mighty Clouds of Joy, a quartet that, like the Dixie Hummingbirds and Nightingales, would become Peacock mainstays. "Jesus Lead Me Safely" finds the Clouds leaping out of the gate with a song containing a hypnotic, frenetic vamp. A special addition is the Pilgrim Jubilee Singers' smash hit, "Stretch Out," featuring bass legend Willie Dixon. As popular as "Stretch Out" was at the time, it is difficult to find the original single today. Nations includes as many liner notes as made sense, given that he has written about many of these artists in previous editions. My understanding is that these compilations aren't pressed in large quantities, so if you are interested in securing a copy, act quickly. (Bob Marovich)

Cyril Neville pays homage to his hometown, New Orleans, and its R&B tradition on this CD, which features tunes from a number of the genre's local masters, such as Fats Domino, Eddie Bo, and Henry Byrd -- known to the world as Professor Longhair. Like Professor Longhair, Neville has his "Red Beans Cookin'" on this record. The diverse songs cook down into a delicious dish, so much like the New Orleans gustatory style that gives the CD its name. There are many similarities between making good food and good music in New Orleans: the right ingredients, the right attitude, and the right spices to bring out the flavor. And good cooks. All these basics are in evidence here. The youngest of the renowned Neville Brothers, drummer Cyril Neville wrote the title cut with New Orleans piano legend Allen Toussaint, who joins him on the recording. In perfect New Orleans style, they wax eloquent about the shared attributes of a lady love and an oyster po'boy. The song was chosen as the best of 2000 in the Best of the Beat Awards given by Offbeat, the New Orleans music magazine. Also contributing to the musical mix are Marva Wright, Roderick Paulin, and the "Satchmo of the Ghetto," James Andrews. The clarity of the horns and the rich voice of the blues diva produce some hot tracks. Together, the group covers some tasty territory with songs like "I'm Ready," "Tipitina," "Fortune Teller," and "Tell It Like It Is" (a song brother Aaron Neville made popular in the early '60s). Cyril Neville has a "one world" outlook, often paying homage to traditions and ancestors from the reggae heroes of Jamaica to Afro-Caribbean masters to Native Americans of the western United States. On this CD, he pays honorable tribute to the R&B ancestors in his own backyard.- Sharon Winter

Wishing all of you a great Saturday!
First of all, thanks Gyro for sharing this gospel series! Even at the height of the CD boom, there was never a comprehensive, official box set of the incredible gospel music on Peacock, so it's wonderful to be able to hear the range of music produced by that label.
We have to be grateful that Acrobat and Opal Nations tried to re-dress the issue by releasing these volumes. However, Acrobat is infamous for releasing discs with terrible sound quality. I don't mean the crackles and pops that one expects from obscure 78 transfers; rather, it seems that they often use some kind of software to remove the noise and instead adulterate the sound. I for one don't mind scratchy, noisy 78s, but hate it when they take the guts out of incredible music such as this.
Please don't interpret this as a criticism of the posts. I just like discussing what I hear (and venting at Acrobat sometimes). Despite the label's shortcomings, there is enough of great historical interest here to be more than grateful for.
Thanks again!
Emilie
@Emilie,
Agree with you completely. Not complaining about the sound quality of the Texas Gospel series specifically, but in general, any noise reduction software applied to vintage vinyl robs the music of its magic. No-Noize [software] and its many cousins is no friend of ours!
many thanks clash for the new orleans gems!

Got em all, thank so much again...
