"Soul Brothers & Blues Sisters"

In most cases, the men featured here were described as soul singers, while their female counterparts tend to wear a jazz or blues label. But as your ears will tell you, it s all about the magic in the grooves. There are artists here whose fame will live forever like James Brown, Smokey Robinson, Sam Cooke and Otis Redding and others whose fame remains confined to enthusiasts. Turn up the volume and celebrate with the first generation of soul brothers and blues sisters characters who brought black music to the mainstream and blazed a trail so many have since followed to our great benefit.trax disc 1:

Morning
Based in Los Angeles this short-lived outfit featured the talents of guitarists Barry Brown and Terry Johnson, keyboardist Jim Hobson, drummer Jim Kehn, singer/guitarist Jay Lewis and bassist Bruce Wallace.
Signed by Vault Records, the band's cleverly titled 1970 debut "Morning" was produced by Brown, Hobson and Lewis. With most of the band contributing material, the collection offered up a variety of genres including Poco-styled country-rockers ('Tell Me a Story' and 'Roll 'em Down') and slower-paced folk-rock numbers ('Early Morning' and 'Time').
Lewis had a nifty voice, the rest of the band capable of contributing some nice CSN&Y-styled harmonies ('Easy Keeper' and 'Dirt Road'). Sure, it may not have been the year's most original offering, but the set was never less than pleasant and tracks such as 'And I'm Gone' and the trippy 'Sleepy Eyes' were miles ahead of the competition. (The album was originally released with a gatefold sleeve.)

Thanks to all concerned for the amazing catalogue of soul over the last few weeks. Your efforts are much appreciated, as is your generosity.
Could anyone help me with a request? Can't find the Johnny Nash/Kim Weston LP anywhere and I would love to hear it in full. Here's hoping!

Marvin Gaye - What’s Going On: 40th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition (2 x CD, Flac)
http://www.discogs.com/Marvin-Gaye-Whats-Going-On/release/3005073

Disconsolate over duet partner Tammi Terrell’s death, disturbed by his brother’s letters from Vietnam, depressed by Detroit’s urban blight, chafing against Motown’s factory system, Marvin Gaye was at a crossroads in 1970. After receiving an unfinished protest song by Four Tops member Renaldo “Obie” Benson and in-house songwriter Al Cleveland, Gaye and the Funk Brothers went into the studio and created the innovative title track, a crossover smash. Then came the album, an indelible quiet-storm jeremiad. This two-CD edition adds single mixes, demos, instrumentals for future songs, and the original “Detroit Mix.”

Musical & Social Landmark
By P Magnum on December 22, 2000

By the time 1970 rolled around, Marvin Gaye had grown tired of his singing career. Although he was a major star, having huge hits, he felt disenfranchised from the business. The death of his close friend and singer partner Tammi Terrill had thrown him into serious state of depression and anger. He became serious about football and tried out with the Detroit Lions and he also had a hand at boxing. He, of course, never made the cut with these activities. His brother Frankie had recently come back from Vietnam and the stories that he related Marvin, helped spur him out of his funk and into the recording studio. He turned those feelings of detachment, melancholy and anger into one of the landmark albums in musical history. Gone were the days of Mr. Gaye singing about love and happiness, What's Going On explored the situation and status of the black man in society as well as the problems facing the world as a whole. The title track opens the album and he ponders the question of what is going on in the world today. It was not just about the brothers dying in and mothers crying about the Vietnam War, but about the wars of everyday life in Urban America. The next five songs flow in and out of one another forming a musical suite. In "What's Happening Brother" he questions why the inner city is decaying while "Flyin' High (In The Friendly Sky)" is about Mr. Gaye's drug use. "Save The Children" asks for us to get together and make the world a better places for our kids and he provides a possible solution by looking to higher powers in "God Is Love". "Mercy, Mercy Me (The Ecology)" is his take on the polluting of the world. "Right On" is a what one might call psychedelic funk and "Wholy Holy" is a sermon from the son of a preacher. The album closes back where it started with "Inner City Blues (Make Me Holler)" where Mr. Gaye rails against the problems of the ghettos. What's Going On was deemed so non-commercial by Motown, that they refused to release it and it sat in the can for almost a year. Mr. Gaye threatened to leave the label and they relented and finally released it in 1971. The album became a huge hit and Marvin Gaye was hailed for his ground-breaking work. The album is more than just music, it is a honest and open look at the ills of society. The album opened up many people's eyes and made them think about alot things they wouldn't have normally paid attention to. Unfortunately, most people didn't pay attention as most of the problems the album addresses are sadly still relevant today.

James Brown - Foundations Of Funk: A Brand New Bag: 1964-1969 (2 x CD, Flac)
http://www.allmusic.com/album/foundations-of-funk-a-brand-new-bag-1964-1969-mw0000180903

''Whoaaaa! If this doesn't get you moving...well, funk and soul are not your thang. This is the real thang, from one of the top two or three individuals performers in all of rock/funk/soul music, "Mr. Dynamite, The Man with the Crown, Soul Brother No. 1, The Original Brother Rapp., the Amazing Mr. Please Please Please Himself, JAAAAAAAMES BROWWWWWWWWNNN" (from the liner notes)."

There are several worthy James Brown compilations. But this is the one, more than any other, that presents his most fertile and innovative soul and funk material. From 1964's "Out of Sight" through 1969's "Mother Popcorn," this was Brown at the apex of his creativity, turning soul into funk in the mid-'60s, then pushing the rhythm even more to the forefront. Most of his hit singles from this five-year explosion of white heat are on this 27-track, two-CD set, including "Out of Sight," "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," "I Got You (I Feel Good)," "Say It Loud--I'm Black and I'm Proud," and "Cold Sweat." There are some minor omissions that could be questioned (the absence of the studio version of "Bring It Up," for instance), and big James Brown fans will already have the lion's share of tracks, on the Star Time box and other releases. It does, however, contain minor but significant bonuses: an alternate take of "Cold Sweat," a previously unreleased live medley of "Out of Sight" and "Bring It Up," and a previously unreleased live version of "Licking Stick--Licking Stick." There are also longer versions of "I Don't Want Nobody to Give Me Nothing" (ten minutes!), "I Got the Feelin'," "The Popcorn," and "Brother Rapp" that were edited when they were prepared for official release. -Allmusic

Funkadelic - Music For Your Mother : Funkadelic 45s (2 x CD, Flac)
http://www.allmusic.com/album/music-for-your-mother-mw0000093361

Massive 2-CD compilation of original single A & B sides spanning the years 1969-1976, including 10 cuts never on album & 23 cuts with original edits, plus new artwork & pics. -Amazon.com

Though Tales of Kidd Funkadelic brought together some oddballs and rarities from Funkadelic's early- to mid-'70s existence, it wasn't until Music for Your Mother came out that there was a full compilation of all the band's singles from birth to the mid-decade switch to Warner Bros. And what a compilation it is: Bringing together some of the band's best material as well as some of its craziest, Music for Your Mother does the business for any self-respecting P-Funk clone. Given that the focus is on A- and B-sides rather than album cuts, it isn't a truly exhaustive overview -- that would require the inclusion of songs like "Maggot Brain" and "Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow," for a start. It's a small quibble in context, though, especially given the inclusion of a number of songs that never made it onto the original eight albums. Most notable is a curious rarity, the semi-smooth soul "I Miss My Baby" single, which was credited to U.S., with music by Funkadelic (U.S. being a group led by eventual P-Funk guitarist Gary Shider). As for the other B-sides and uncollected numbers, they're an understandably mixed but often interesting bunch, including alternate instrumental takes of "Music for Your Mother" and "I Wanna Know if It's Good to You," the unreleased "Can't Shake It Loose" single, the gospel/feedback freakout "Open Our Eyes," and the hilariously titled "Fish, Chips and Sweat." The amazing bonus to the whole collection is the exhaustive 24-page booklet, reviewing the entire early history of Funkadelic via archival photos and a slew of interviews with the surviving participants. Plenty of fun tales are told, but George Clinton didn't participate -- not surprising, given the unflattering picture eventually painted of him -- while the depressing fates of Eddie Hazel and Tawl Ross get deserved attention. -Allmusic

Hey RYP, can I leave a message for "the madman"?... Okay thanks.

Allan, I know you are hurting and probably don't want to talk to anybody, least of all me. But if it needs a time like this for apologies, then I'll be the one to say "Sorry". If you need someone to talk to, you know how to get hold of me.
Everybody here feels for your loss.
