One of our favorite albums ever from soul singer Paul Kelly – an overlooked talent who was given a great 70s run by Warner Brothers, but never fully got his due! Paul's got roots in southern soul, but works here in a slightly modern mode too – with production from Buddy Killen that ties together strong strands of styles, but also helps Kelly find a fresh voice of his own. Things are nicely smooth at times, but still firmly in a deep soul vibe – almost a precursor to territory that Lew Kirton would explore a few years later, but without as much of a groove. The mellower cuts are wonderful – maybe some of the best that Kelly ever recorded – and titles include "You Make Me Tremble", "I Believe I Can", "Holding On For Dear Life", "Try My Love", and "Hooked Hogtied & Collared". (Dusty Groove)

Thanks (to RYP, Jillem, and Gyro), I didn't know about PK,
this is the main thing which makes TZ so interesting --you're
always putting out great (new) music, at least for the standard
listener. Please keep it up, this new period which is beginning!
Cheers Daniel, from Spain...

Marie Queenie Lyons - Soul Fever (flac)

More than three decades after its original release, and for the very first time on CD, is Marie Queenie Lyons cult classic "Soul Fever", one of the most well regarded "lost" albums of all-time. Queenie certainly had the qualifications (in both sass and vocals) to be hired by James Brown as one of his "funky divas". Marie "Queenie" Lyons is an enigma. After the 1970 release of this, her only album, she disappeared forever. Because of the prodigious wealth of talent in black America at the time, great albums with tiny marketing budgets were often overlooked. 'Soul Fever" was just one drop in a fabulous, funky ocean. Over the decades, this album has become one of the rarest and most prized Southern soul albums from that prolific era. Seriously recommended for fans of Betty Davis.

Toots & the Maytals - Never Grow Old
The Maytals: Frederick "Toots" Hibbert, Henry "Raleigh" Gordon, Nathaniel "Jerry" McCarthy.
The Skatalites include: Jerry Haines, Ernest Ranglin (guitar); Tommy McCook, Roland Alphonso (saxophone); Jackie Mittoo (piano); Lloyd Brevette (bass); Lloyd Knibbs (drums).
A reissue of the Maytals' debut album, recorded in 1962 and 1963, with four bonus cuts from the same era. Like all of the major Jamaican bands of the time, the Maytals were performing ska during this era, and doing a pretty good job of it, although the more distinctive stylings of their reggae prime are only hinted at here. Produced by C.S. Dodd (who co-wrote most of the songs with Toots Hibbert), and featuring the Skatalites on backup, it's respectable early ska, though not as good as the ska laid down by the Wailers in the mid-'60s. One of the bonus tracks, a cover of "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Cry (Over You)," is the highlight, with its infectiously bouncy verve. -Allmusic

Sir JJ-Thanks for the Maytals in flac and the latest soul packs!
RYP, Jillem, thank you.
I too am anonymous.
Many thanks for Toots & The Maytals, James Brown, Edwin Starr, and Marie Queenie Lyons. I look forward to listening to all of the above posts and being in soul and reggae heaven. I think it great that this blog provides a venue for Jillem to post music without running afoul of the Google overlords. Combining his posts with Gyro's, Ryp's, and other contributors really makes an incredible music blog. Also, I love WeTransfer because of its ability to transfer large files and its ease of use. May it and this blog be around forever!
Joy joy joy! Happy happy happy ! ! !
FINALY ! ! ! A “Jillem” gem in FLAC that I MIGHT be able to successfully git!
(It's NOT of the monstrous 4, 5, or 600 + MB size, or LARGER, those gargantuan Whee-Transmute files which ALWAYS fail to download for me ! ! !)
Thanks! ! !
May we have some more . . . (Sir ?)?!?!
