BONUS 2 OF 3

The Bellfuries - Workingman's Bellfuries '15 @320

“Simply mix a little Elvis, Marty Robbins, Roy Orbison and a smattering of Buck Owens, Big Sandy and Los Lobos for good measure and that pretty much personifies The Bellfuries’ sound.”

Passionate, rootsy rock & roll come right out at you immediately from Austin’s The Bellfuries.  This band, who’s been around for a while, have upped their game with this latest album, the cleverly titled Workingman’s Bellfuries.  A mix of that classic Texas twang, the Sun sound and rhythms that swing has to be good, right?  Right.  Let’s make that clear now.  Simply mix a little Elvis, Marty Robbins, Roy Orbison and a smattering of Buck Owens, Big Sandy and Los Lobos for good measure and that pretty much personifies The Bellfuries’ sound.  Add to that a production quality that brings you right into the late ’50’s/early ’60’s, which sounds natural and pure and it’s a “can’t miss”.  Dig?
About the songs, it’s simple:  “Loving Arms” kicks off the album with a good old-fashioned swing that you, indeed, can’t resist tapping your toes to; “Bad Seed Sown” sounds like something Elvis would have recorded and “Why Do You Haunt Me?” is my favorite and the album’s standout with its Tex-Mex feel.  “Make The Mystery No More” starts with a strident drum, reminiscent of Phil and Don’s “Cathy’s Clown” with a great reverb guitar body; “Letter To My Baby Maybe” has a wonderfully crisp tempo and a joyride riff and “Beaumont Blues” chugs along with a classic melody and some tight harmonies.
An album I’d love to be driving down an open road listening to – as cliched as that may sound, it’s a great way to gauge an album’s pleasure factor.  And this one has it in spades.  So keep an eye out for The Bellfuries.  They’ve got it – and they’re bringing it all back.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

BONUS 3 OF 3

Gene Taylor with CC Jerome's Jet Setters- Let Me Ride In Your Automobile '10 (El Toro Records) @320

Gene Taylor is a fabulous blues and boogie pianist who got his start working with the cream of the West Coast's blues stars, including Big Joe Turner, T-Bone Walker, Lowell Fulson and Pee-Wee Crayton. He later went on to work with Canned Heat, the Blasters, James Harman, the Red Devils and the Fabulous Thunderbirds. This solo album is a real international offering, with American Gene being backed by the Dutch band CC Jerome's Jet Setters and being issued on the Spanish label El Toro. Having said that it sounds totally authentic, with Gene and the band working similar territory to Britain's Mike Sanchez - piano-based rock and roll, boogie and rocking blues. The band - CC Jerome on guitar, bassist Deon Buck and drummer Coen Molenschot - back up Mr. Taylor really well throughout and are joined on a couple of tracks by Martin "Tinez" Van Toor on tenor sax and US visitor Nick Curran on guitar.

There is a good variety of material here, with Gene and the band totally at home with both old rockers like Johnny 'Guitar' Watson's "Motorhead Baby" and Lowell Fulson's arrangement of "Let Me Ride In Your Automobile" and also tracks written especially for this record. These include both the rocking instrumentals "Evangeline Stomp" and "Flying With Whitey" (with their battling saxes and piano) and the subtler songs like "Just A Midnight Girl" (with its nice harmonica solo from Jeffrey Thielens) and "The Blues To Me", probably my favourite track. This is a really good album, congratulations to all those involved. (Record Runner)
