How about John Lee Hooker backed by Muddy Waters and his band? That's what went down at the Cafe Au Go-Go in 1966, and the first eight tracks capture this meeting of immortals for posterity. The other six tracks were recorded at Soledad Prison in 1972, and are quintessential Hooker-ian "endless boogie." One Scotch, One Bourbon and One Beer , and more.
Simply one of the greatest live blues recordings ever. Hooker plays alone at Soledad, yet the real thrill is hearing him backed at Greenwich Village's Café Au-Go-Go in 1966 by Muddy Waters and his band, including pianist Otis Spann, unsung harmonica giant George Smith, Francis Clay on drums, and guitarists Sammy Lawhorn and Luther Johnson. All are at the height of their abilities, but it's Hooker who works like a hoodoo conjurer, making misery rain down in "Seven Days" and "When My First Wife Left Me." This August night's reading of "I'm Bad Like Jesse James" ranks among the most intimidating vocal performances ever taped. His guitar and baritone singing sink to rarely heard depths of the blues--that secret place in the music (known only to its absolute masters) where it becomes an elemental force. --Ted Drozdowski, Record Runner
This CD reissue combines John Lee Hooker's "Live At The Cafe Au Go-Go" album with five songs from his "Live At Soledad Prison" LP (the other two songs from that LP had John Lee Hooker, jr. doing lead vocals, which is probably why they aren't included).
The eight Cafe Au Go-Go-tracks feature Muddy Waters and his band backing John Lee Hooker, and Hooker performs some of his best songs in rough, tough arrangements, topped by his hoarse, expressive baritone voice.
It's a little bit unusual to hear the Hook backed by a full band, but the arrangements work very well, and Hooker is in no way overwhelmed by the presence of three more guitarists (Muddy Waters, Sammy Lawhorn and Luther Johnson), and pianist Otis Spann.
Highlights include a truly menacing "I'm Bad Like Jesse James", a swaggering, swinging "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer", a tremendous, slow "I'll Never Get Out Of These Blues Alive", and a soulful "When My First Wife Left Me", to which Otis Spann adds some truly magnificent piano playing.
On the Soledad tracks, which are also band-backed, Hooker lays down great renditions of "What's The Matter Baby" and "It Serves Me Right To Suffer", with the twin lead guitars of Luther Tucker and Charlie Grimes smouldering behind him.
"Lucille" is a great, mid-tempo boogie, and "Bang Bang Bang Bang" an alternative version of "Boom Boom", which rocks every bit as much as the MTV version did twenty years later.
If your idea of what the blues should sound like is latter-day B.B. King or Robert Cray, this might not be your thing. These recordings are far from polished and very much full of grit, but if you like your blues raw and ragged, this is indeed the real deal. One of the finest, most autenthic live blues records I have ever heard. (Blues World)

Got to love John Lee - thanks Madman, much appreciated.
A request, Irene Reid - I've Been Here All The Time LP. Any chance? I have odd tracks but never managed to track down the whole thing.
It's good to have you back, and like many others on this site, my thoughts are with you and your family. I hope you can find some solace in the fine music that you share so generously.

ROD STEWART - A Night On The Town (2 Cd Deluxe Edition 2009 Rhino Records) @320
In some ways, it's easy to think of A Night on the Town, Rod Stewart's second album for Warner, as a reprisal of the first, cut with many of the same musicians as Atlantic Crossing, produced once again by Tom Dowd, and even following its predecessor's conceit of having a "Slow Side" and "Fast Side" (granted, this flips the two around, opening with the slow one first). Superficially, this seems true, but A Night on the Town has a crucial difference: despite its party-hearty title, this album finds Stewart folding folk back into his sound, a move that deepens the music tonally and emotionally, particularly in the case of "The Killing of Georgie (Pts. 1 & 2)," Rod's most ambitious original. A winding, sensitive narrative about the murder of a gay friend -- a hate crime years before the term existed -- "The Killing of Georgie" finds Stewart filtering Dylan through his own warm, conversational style, creating a remarkable work unlike anything else in his body of work, yet the song's smooth synthesis of folk storytelling, soul, and incipient disco act as an appropriate conclusion to a side-long suite of songs of seduction, beginning with his classic come-on "Tonight's the Night (Gonna Be Alright)," running through his splendid reading of Cat Stevens' "The First Cut Is the Deepest," and his fine original "Fool for You." On the Fast Side, Stewart has only one original -- the lewd, riotous "The Balltrap" -- but he more makes up for it by spinning two country classics, Gib Guilbeau's "Big Bayou" and Hank Thompson's "The Wild Side of Life," into thick, Stonesy rock & roll, and turning Manfred Mann's "Pretty Flamingo" into a rave-up. With all this in mind, A Night on the Town isn't a revival of Atlantic Crossing, it's its inverse, with Stewart shining as an interpreter on the fast songs and writing the best slow ones, but it's also its equal, proving that Stewart could still stay true to his open-hearted, ragged soul while on a big budget. (Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Allmusic)
First of all, the original album is one of Rod Stewart's best. Chances are you know about the singles--Tonight's the Night, First Cut is the Deepest and the underrated "Killing of Georgie" but the rest of the tracks are all as good, with the exception of "Trade Winds." The rockers are high energy affairs with Rod wrapping that magnficent voice around amazing guitar work by Steve Cropper and other great studio musicians. And "Fool for You" is something of a forgotten Rod Stewart classic.
But the real treat here on this limited edition is the second disc. Starting with a never-before released song, "Share" which maybe a little weak lyrically but is still a vital track due to Stewart's delivery. The disc then features alternative versions of the entire original album. "Tonight's the Night" features a different third verse, and this new unearthed version of "First Cut is the Deepest" may actually be better than the orginal.
All of the versions of disc 2 are unpolished wich provides a unique listening experience that I highly recommend to all Rod Stewart fans. If you EVER liked a Night on the Town, you will love this limited collector's edition. But get it quick as it won't be around for too long! (Record Runner)

ROD STEWART - Atlantic Crossing (2 Cd Deluxe Edition 2009 Rhino Records) @320
When Rod Stewart signed to Warner Bros. in 1975, the deal coincided with his move to the States, and his coming into his own as a reigning global superstar. Stewart's debut for the label, ATLANTIC CROSSING, was his sixth solo LP and his first without any of his mates from the Faces, who disbanded in '75. Produced by the legendary Tom Dowd, it made Billboard's Top 10, and charted with the now-classic hits 'Sailing' and 'This Old Heart Of Mine.' A NIGHT ON THE TOWN followed in 1976-Stewart's first platinum release, it delivered the #1 smash 'Tonight's The Night.' Both albums mixed covers and originals split between fast and slow sides, and both were recorded in Muscle Shoals and Los Angeles with session luminaries including the MG's. The pleasure of each title is now doubled with 2-CD COLLECTOR'S EDITIONS, and a wealth of previously unreleased tracks. (Record Runner)
Atlantic Crossing was Rod Stewart's first release on the Warner Brothers labeland he recorded most of it at the famous Muscle Schoals Studio in Alabama. The album has a gritty, R&B edge, but is balanced out nicely by some ballads. "Three Time Loser", "Alright For Another" & "Stone Cold Sober" has a delta blues sound to them, while his cover of Dobie Gray's "Drift Away" has a Stax Records vibe. He does his original take on The Isley Brothers' "This Old Heart Of Mine" here and he does a heartbreakingly beautiful rendition of Danny Whitten of Crazy Horse's "I Don't Want To Talk About It". "Sailing" was not a hit in America, but was absolutely humongous in the UK. It is his biggest hit by far over there. Atlantic Crossing was a nice bounce back after the disappointing Smiler and a great start to his warner Brothers career. (Rolling Stone)

BOB DYLAN & THE BAND - Before the Flood (1974, MFSL 2015) @320
Bob Dylan and the Band both needed the celebrated reunion tour of 1974, since Dylan's fortunes had been floundering since Self Portrait and the Band stumbled with 1971's Cahoots. The tour, with its attendant publicity, definitely returned both artists to center stage, and it definitely succeeded, breaking box office records and earning great reviews. Before the Flood, a double-album souvenir of the tour, suggests that these were generally dynamic shows, but not because they were reveling in the past, but because Dylan was fighting the nostalgia of his audience -- nostalgia, it must be noted, that was promoted as the very reason behind these shows. Yet that's what gives this music such kick -- Dylan reworks, rearranges, reinterprets these songs in ways that are still disarming, years after its initial release. He could only have performed interpretations this radical with a group as sympathetic, knowing of his traits as the band, whose own recordings here are respites from the storm. And this is a storm -- the sound of a great rocker, surprising his band and audience by tearing through his greatest songs in a manner that might not be comforting, but it guarantees it to be one of the best live albums of its time. Ever, maybe. (Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Allmusic)

GREEN ON RED - Here Come The Snakes '89 (2 CD Deluxe Edition) @320
Produced by Jim Dickinson and Joe Hardy, Dan Stuart and Chuck Prophet finally cracked the Memphis sound by steeping themselves in the environment and surrounding themselves with the musicians who made their name there. From the get-go, Prophet's guitar is the cornerstone to the Let It Bleed mood that fires this record from "Keith Can't Read" throughout, though it ends up with the very Neil Young-like "D.T. Blues." (Allmusic)
2-CD deluxe digipak set is an expanded version of Green On Red’s 1989 fifth full-length. Dan Stuart and Chuck Prophet meet legendary eccentric producer and session musician Jim Dickinson, known for his work ranging from Big Star and the Replacements to the Rolling Stones and Aretha Franklin, at Ardent Studios to create a definitive Memphis record. Original icono-graphic Americana cover art photography by William Eggleston forms the basis of this expanded deluxe packaged set which includes a second disc of outtakes and alternate versions. Good Morning RYP,
Bear Family presents some of the best Rockabilly artists ever to record, there are four volumes under the title The Drugstore's Rockin'. This is a great collection from Bear Family which spotlights lesser known artists and songs and the sound quality is excellent. Collectors at Bear Family never seem to get to the bottom of the barrel when it comes to early rock & roll gems. While not geared to the casual oldies listener, this piece is of interest to the collector for its rarely reissued hits and for the hard-core collector searching for obscurities not found elsewhere.
