Diesel Park West - Shakespeare Alabama (1989, Remaster 2005) @320

One of the '80s most striking debuts, the first album from this Leicester, England, quintet is filled with soaring guitar epics, complemented by the powerful vocals and provocative lyrics of frontman John Butler and expertly produced by Chris Kimsey. Heavily influenced by the same jangly folk-rock (Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, etc.) that helped fuel R.E.M. and other alternative darlings, Butler and his bandmates opted for clarity instead of navel-gazing, creating anthemic tunes like "All the Myths on Sunday" and "Bell of Hope," which sounded like instant classics and considered appropriately big topics like religion and history. But the band may have been, as its label claimed, "years ahead of its time" -- while Diesel Park West followed its debut 45 "When the Hoodoo Comes" with several more singles, including the rocking "Like Princes Do" and "Jackie's Still Sad," the group struggled to find an audience, and also failed to repeat the magic of Shakespeare Alabama on subsequent albums. But this outing, now out of print, has become a sought-after item among fans who recognized greatness when they heard it. (Allmusic)

The Holy Modal Rounders - 1 & 2 (1962-63) @320

One of the most distinctive folk/bluegrass units of the 1960s was the Holy Modal Rounders, whose Fantasy recordings combined Appalachian bluegrass and country traditions with the Greenwich Village/East Coast folk of the period. Although singer/acoustic guitarist Steve Weber and singer/fiddler/banjo player Peter Stampfel -- collectively, the Holy Modal Rounders -- had a strong appreciation of Appalachian music, they fit right in on the East Coast coffeehouse circuit of the 1960s. In 1999, Fantasy reissued the duo's first two albums, The Holy Modal Rounders and The Holy Modal Rounders 2 on the 67-minute CD 1 & 2, which offers abundant proof of its humorous, tongue-in-cheek outlook. These 1963-1964 recordings aren't the work of a group that took itself too seriously -- from Weber's goofy "Mister Spaceman" and Stampfel's quirky "Bound to Lose" to interpretations of Bill Monroe's "Hot Corn, Cold Corn" and Blind Willie McTell's "Statesboro Blues," it's clear that the Rounders are having a lot of fun. For those who are seeking something unorthodox from folk and bluegrass, 1 & 2 is highly recommended. (Allmusic)

Johnny Rivers - Realization '68 @320

Not a concept album, but a song cycle depicting life in southern California in the late '60s, Realization is a fine cycle to catch a ride on. It's also a serious surprise -- when psychedelia reared its head in 1967, the results were frequently disastrous for those performers who'd been specializing in straight-ahead rock & roll, and few had rocked harder or more straight-ahead than Johnny Rivers. Instead of jumping on a bandwagon that had nothing to do with where he was musically, he hijacked the sounds of psychedelic rock -- much as the Temptations did at Motown -- and took it where he was going. Acting as his own producer for the first time, Rivers opened up a slightly gentler side to his work that's equally valid and a lot more interesting, if not quite as exciting as his rock & roll classics. After a few sonic digressions as a lead-in, "Hey Joe" gets going, carrying listeners into Rivers' gorgeous rendition of James Hendricks' "Look to Your Soul." His own achingly beautiful "The Way We Live" follows, and then comes Hendricks' "Summer Rain," which turned into Rivers' last big hit of the 1960s. And then he has the temerity to take "A Whiter Shade of Pale" and make it prettier and harder -- but less spacy -- than the Procol Harum original; from there he plunges into blue-eyed soul on "Brother, Where Are You." The surprises continue right through to the rather delicate, introspective reading of "Positively Fourth Street" at the close, Rivers succeeding in evoking a vast array of thoughts and emotions. For his trouble, helped by the two hits, he was rewarded with a Top Five charting album, and one that has continued to find new admirers across the decades. (Allmusic)

Kitty, Daisy & Lewis - The Third '15 @320

The north London sibling trio famous for their rockabilly looks and love of vintage sounds have been keepin’ it real, recording their retro-styled songs on analogue gear in an old Camden curry house.
Purists may sniff, and there is an irritating hipster whiff about the twentysomething Durham kids with their pinky rings and catsuits, fashion equivalents of the rattling rehearsal space treble in their audio mix. But their heartfelt mastery of old-school R&B, blues and Hawaiian guitar is too much fun to dismiss and their third album showcases some knockout songwriting.
Produced by The Clash’s Mick Jones, The Third is a hot, sweet pancake stack of danceable tracks, drizzled with drama and swung by a terrific horn section. Having three vocalists and three songwriters also shuffles the deck nicely. Highlights from the girls include the gutsy, Nancy Sinatra-style stomp of Whenever You See Me, the disco theatrics of No Action and the neat twist to Stevie Wonder’s Superstition offered by the clavinet funk of Feeling of Wonder.
Brother Lewis offers a breezy riverboat farewell on Baby Bye Bye and a little topical protest blues about the destruction of old London by greedy vandals on Developer’s Disease. Pop on some polka dots and cut a rug. (Helen Brown, The Telegraph UK)

Miami Sound - Rare Funk & Soul From Miami Florida 1967-1974 @320

Like other releases from the U.K.-based Soul Jazz label -- such as Philadelphia Roots or New Orleans Funk -- the 17-track Miami Sound: Rare Funk & Soul from Miami Florida 1967-1974 prides itself on its obscurity, digging out tracks that have been lost to all but the fanatically dedicated collector. That's Soul Jazz's stock in trade: They occasionally feature hits, but they're regional hits, and none of the material on any of their collections is readily available on CD. While there's the occasional feeling that sides are chosen for obscurity's sake, it's often overshadowed by the consistency of the material; it all sounds of a piece, due to the compilers' expert ears and their desire to hold the groove above all other considerations. This is appropriate especially for Miami Sound, since the city's soul was as groove-oriented as New Orleans, but considerably more splashy, stylish, streamlined, hard, and sleek -- the kind of grooves that work really well as recordings, which is why this may be the best installment yet of Soul Jazz's soul-oriented compilations. Each cut here has a bright neon glow and deep danceability that point the way to disco, and while that can sometimes get a little samey on the instrumentals -- with the notable exception of Timmy Thomas' rampaging "Funky Me," whose beat even points the way toward electro -- what makes this collection a real delight is the abundance of great songs. Little Beaver is deservedly a respected cult figure and George and Gwen McCrae are both represented with good early cuts, but the real finds are Joey Gilmore's deep soul, Frank Williams & the Rocketeers' vocal sides, and especially James Knight & the Butlers, whose two tracks, "Save Me" and "Fantasy World," are pure dynamite, a pair of the best unheard soul of the '70s and reason enough to get this collection. Make no mistake, no matter how good those Knight songs are (or much of the rest of this compilation is), nothing here would have been a national hit: They're too idiosyncratic and quirky, too concerned with the overall sound and groove to appeal to a wider audience. But that's why Miami Sound is worthwhile -- it captures a regional sound in all of its strengths and flaws, and it's all the more compelling a compilation for it. It's one of Soul Jazz's best releases to date. (Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Allmusic)

On this day there are a lot of people who would like some time to hang out "in the shed". It's only been 14 years and I still have the shudders when I think back. I worked in the WTC for 9 years and left in 2000. I lost 60 friends that day. I went to many wakes and mock-funerals. The old line that pain never goes away it just weighs less each year comes to mind. KTF.
