HILLSTOMP
Barn-rattling chicken-shack blues from Portlandia, they call themselves “Bucket & Slide Punk Blues”, but I think of them more as Northwest Blues. A two-piece stomp’n’boogie roadhouse-meets-busker blues duo, they do a crowd-pleasing mix of wildly rearranged classics and raucous originals, and are known especially for their over-the-top live shows. Henry Kammerer alternates between guitar and banjo, with a frequent slide and occasional harmonica, and fleet fingerstyles that mesh the best of the Delta’s repeating hooks, Chicago’s walking bass line, and the two-bar bounce of Texas boogie. John Johnson’s “drum kit” can include anything from a few real drums to plastic buckets, pots & pans, soup cans, duct-taped cymbals, cow bells and a washboard. Raw, rootsy, rebellious & revivalist, their blues grabs the guts of early styles and grinds it through the blades of modern cowpunk and outlaw country.
