The complete recordings of a wonderful soul singer who never fully got her due – Detroit diva Carol Anderson, best known for a few tracks that broke big on the UK Northern scene – but finally presented here with the full scope of her work in one set! Carol had a great approach that was very much in keeping with changes in the Detroit sound of the 70s – vocals that often shared a sense of personal, heartfelt delivery with southern soul of the period – but a tighter, more swinging approach to instrumentation that was still keeping up the Detroit groove of earlier years. The tunes here nicely skirt a distance between Memphis and Motortown – delivered with a rich, expansive heart that should have made Carol a bigger singer than she was a the time. A few of the tracks on the set are nice dancefloor groovers – both in an older style of Northern soul, and in a late 70s/early 80s boogie-styled groove – and as usual, the folks at Grapevine have done a tremendous job with the notes! CD features every single track ever recorded by Carol – 17 titles that include "Sad Girl", "You Boy", "We've Got Enough", "You've Got It Coming", "Party People", "Holding On", "Taking My Mind Off Love", "You Want It", "Ain't Giving Up", "Tomorrow Is Not A Promise", "Come On Over Tonight", and "Master Plan". © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

THE ROOTS OF FUNK 1947-1962 (2015) @320
What are the roots of funk? Since the early Twentieth Century, this term has come to mean sweat, unpleasant body odor and, by analogy, heartfelt dance music.
Symbolic of “Black Power” and African-American liberation culture, funk has deep roots embedded in the intense afro-caribbean musics of Haiti, Cuba, Jamaica, and New Orleans.
Starting with “funky” jazz, “soul jazz” and soul, up to the 1960’s syncopated musics, it has had illustrious “rare groove” precursors such as Bo Diddley, or Sun Ra, whose afro-futurism left its mark on George Clinton, Herbie Hancock and the like. Keeping in line with his “Roots of Punk Rock”, “Roots of Ska” and “Roots of Soul” collections, Bruno Blum has gathered this eclectic selection from the roots offunk music.
He recounts here the spirit and influences that shaped the early hits of James Brown, The Meters, Eddie Bo, Funkadelic and others.

TOMMY KEENE - Laugh In The Dark '15 @320
With the arrival of Laugh in the Dark Tommy Keene offers yet more evidence that he is like an athlete rediscovering his prime. Only in this artist’s case, he never left it.
Laugh in the Dark, while characterized as always by Keene’s distinctive flair for melodic guitar-driven rock and brawny power pop, marks a subtle shift in the artist’s songwriting modus operandi in that unlike previously, the material is all of recent vintage. As he explains, “There were always songs left over from the last project or ideas that hadn’t been fleshed out. What I've done in the past before starting to write for a new record would be to demo a cover or resurrect an old song of mine that I liked but never made the final cut for an album. But all the songs on Laugh in the Dark were started and finished last year from April through October. I started with a completely fresh slate on this one.”

Chicago Gospel Pioneers @320
Chicago Gospel Pioneers (various artists, Spirit Feel/Shanachie Records); Gospel Warriors (various artists, Spirit Feel/Shanachie Records).
Spirit Feel, a small, independent label specializing in historic gospel performances, got off to a good start last year with a release by Marion Williams and a compilation album featuring the Soul Stirrers, Sensational Nightengales and Five Blind Boys. The follow-ups-one composed largely of solo performances from the 1930s through the 1950s, the other a showcase for veteran Chicago gospel artists who continue to sing the praises of the Lord-are similarly noteworthy. Chicago, a gospel center for more than 50 years, thanks to the early migration of thousands of Southern blacks who turned to the church for religion, entertainment and emotional expression, has spawned and nurtured a number of great gospel singers.
``Chicago Gospel Pioneers`` features five such artists, all of them from the first generation raised on gospel: Robert Anderson, a soulful, dynamic performer who is credited with training former gospel singers Sam Cooke and Lou Rawls; Delois Barrett Campbell, known for her stellar phrasing, who reached wider audiences through her appearance in the film ``Say Amen, Somebody``; Little Lucy Smith, a singer and organist whose style combines gospel ballads with pop and light opera; Gladys Beamon Gregory, who moonlighted as a nightclub singer in the 1940s but is right at home with Baptist hymns; and Irma Gwynn, possessed of dignified but stirring contralto. All are in their 60s now, but this album, recorded in 1986 in a Chicago studio, is proof that passing years need not dim man`s spiritual vision or God-given talents.
While women traditionally made up the bulk of many black congregations, the patriarchal orientation of several denominations effectively denied females a place in the gospel quartets so popular in many black churches, including the Baptist and African Methodist Episcopal. Female solo artists, however, were more readily accepted, and ``Gospel Warriors`` features eight of them: Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Mary Johnson Davis, Clara Ward, Marion Williams, Bessie Griffin, Sister Jessie Mae Renfro, Frances Steadman and Clara Hudman, who sang under the name the Georgia Peach. Five of the album`s 16 cuts were recorded in the early 1980s; the rest date from the 1930s, `40s and `50s. Virtually all reflect the vocal dynamics and spiritual fervor that has come to be associated with traditional gospel music at its finest. (Reviewed on LP.)

@ Gyro,
Thank you for the Tommy Keene. He was one of my favorites back in the day. I use to see him quite often with my buds at the 9:30 club in DC which was a favorite hang out of mine in the 80's.
