Gospel Warriors: 50 Years of Female Gospel Classics @320

Spanning a half century of classic performances, Gospel Warriors assembles 16 tracks from some of the church circuit's most renowned female soloists, among them Marion Williams, Bessie Griffin and Sister Rosetta Tharpe. While each vocalist is clearly a singular talent, listening to their music side by side offers real insight into their common gifts for improvisation; all are in total command of melody, tone and lyric, transcending their material to enjoy an unparalleled sense of creative freedom. An ideal introduction for new gospel listeners, the collection's highlights include Tharpe's "Just a Closer Walk with Thee," Williams' "It's Getting Late in the Evening" and Clara Ward's "Precious Lord." BONUS 5 OF 7

John Hulburt - Opus III (1972 LP) (2015 Tompkins Square Reissue) @320

A beautiful solo set from John Hulburt – a little-known Chicago guitarist in the early 70s, and almost our city's answer to the beauty of John Fahey at his best! Hulburt's music is a bit more straightforward, and his tunes a little shorter – but the overall sense of conception is equally imaginative – and we love the way he can spin out these wonderful lines on acoustic guitar, seeming to wrap together a hundred years' worth of musical history, but coming across with a very fresh, personal vision throughout! John's way more than a folk artist, and also isn't one of the precursors of the new acoustic movement to come – and instead, he's got this sound that's incredibly moving and powerful, but in very subtle ways. Titles include "Libby", "Inner Garden", "Evil Olive Waltz", "Guitar On My Knees", "Inside & Otherwise", "All Night Waitress", "Freak On The Black Harley", and "Clark Street".  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

LEE FIELDS & The Expressions - Emma Jean Instrumentals '15 @320

Instrumental versions of all the tracks from Lee Fields' Emma Jean album – served up at a level that really lets us hear how great the music is! Leon Michels is at the helm on keyboards, guitar, and even some sax and flute – and the overall vibe has a mix of deep soul and richer ideas that's similar to his tribute to Isaac Hayes a few years back, but maybe a bit rootsier overall! There's kind of a warm glow to the whole thing that recalls 70s Hi Records at its best – almost a Willie Mitchell sort of feel – and titles include "Stone Angel", "Magnolia", "Paralyzed", "Eye To Eye", "In The Woods", "All I Need", "It Still Gets Me Down", and "Talk To Somebody".  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

BONUS 7 OF 7

LEE FIELDS - Let's Talk It Over '79 [Deluxe Edition + Bonus Tracks] @320

Early early work from Lee Fields – a set originally issued at the end of the 70s, but with a raw funky power that's much more like music from a decade before! The set was a real anomaly at the time, and was passed over for years – but through the decades, it's earned Lee legendary status as one of the few cats who were keeping things hard and funky when the rest of the country was going disco – a reputation that's definitely held up strongly by the gritty tracks in the set! There's a strong echo of southern soul in the music – again the feel of something from years before – and the raw production only seems to make the whole thing sound even better – with an edge that's even different than Fields' better-known work of recent years. The album was done for the tiny Angle 3 label – a company so small that it opted for one of the "stock" images that was given the album by the pressing plant, which gave the album a very unspectacular cover – corrected on this deluxe reissue by the great cover image here. This reissue also features loads of bonus tracks too – other rare Lee Fields singles from over the years – making the package a true testament to his pre-revival genius! Album tracks include "Everybody Gonna Give Their Thing Away (parts 1 & 2)", "Flim Flam", "Wanna Dance", "She's A Lovemaker", "Mighty Mighty Love", and "Let's Talk It Over". Bonus tracks include "Fought For Survival", "Funky Screw", "The Bull Is Coming", "Take Me Back", "You Been Cutting Out On Me", and "Bewildered".  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Good Morning RYP,
Adding to JohnnyD's and Jillem's post's of early Hawaiian music here is some early Hawaiian Pedal Steel and Lap Steel Guitars from 1926-1944. Enjoy the pops and crackles since these were ripped from 78's.

Sol Hoʻopiʻi was a Native Hawaiian guitarist claimed by many as the all-time best lap steel guitar virtuoso, and he is one of the most famous original Hawaiian steel guitarists along with Joseph Kekuku, Frank Ferera, Sam Ku West and "King" Bennie Nawahi. The most celebrated steel guitarist of the Hawaiian golden age who first came to the mainland as a stowaway in 1919. I believe he is the only performer to appear on every Hawaiian slide compilation, where liner notes typically describe him with a single word hot. Most of his 78's (over 200!!) were recorded in Los Angeles, where he enjoyed great popularity in such clubs as the Hula Hutt and Seven Seas. He appeared in many movies, toured the country advancing his highly rhythmic slide techniques, and left his stamp on an entire generation of lap steel and pedal steel guitarists in the emerging country & western style.

Now Some Gospel - The Radio Four
Reviewed by Tony May

Apparently all genuine brothers Babb. Yes, of course there are five of them, don't ask silly questions while I'm trying to be creative. Another dip by Ace into Nashboro Records classic mid-50s gospel vaults, the older tracks feature original lead singer Morgan Babb. Morgan went onto solo fame though never to the heights of such as Sam Cooke. Much of the songs here contains upbeat material somewhat resembling the more aggressive side of the Soul Stirrers. The accompaniment bops merrily along and the overall impression is of a good dollop of the raw energy associated with this particular selection of Gospel. One plus mark is the absence of the standard songs that crop up regularly on these traditional sets. The Radio Four seemed to concentrate on older, obscure songs and though, like the songs, very little is known of the group, the standard of performance makes this a welcome arrival. The sound on this @320 is spectacular.

Too bad Tom Petty has already appropriated the term "buried treasure" for musical obscurities, because it certainly applies to this set by the Radio Four. A find for sure, and thanks for posting it!
