"Across The Board" Vol 1 - Goldmine

An array of obscure soul from the United States, hence the title Across the Board, but "Across the Ocean" would be more appropriate. Features one smash, "It's Too Late to Turn Back Now," by Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose, and 20 surprises by a host of artists including the late Tony Hestor, who wrote "In the Rain" and other songs for the Dramatics. Belita Wood's rendition of Vernon Harrells' "That's When I'll Stop Loving You," is as heart stopping as Linda Jones' better-known version. Woods went on to sing with the S.O.S. Band and George Clinton. Harmony lovers will be down with Channel 3's "The Sweetest Things," and "Love Stormy Weather" by Melvin Brown & James Matthews is surprising because one of them sounds so much like Teddy Pendergrass. A rare Walter Jackson track entitled "Let Me Come Back," will delight his longtime fans and newbies, as well. Gene Redding never had a major hit, but he recorded some tough sides, his "I Need Your Lovin'" shows what this underrated soul singer was all about. And there's enough Southern soul by the likes of Otis Clay, Bill Brandon, Carl Stewart, and others to satisfy diehards of the style. (Andrew Hamilton, Allmusic)

DEXYS MIDNIGHT RUNNERS - Searching For The Young Soul Rebels ’80 (2010) [30th Anniversary Edition] @320

From the disillusioned, distortion-filled radio flicking that precedes the triumphant cry, "for Godsake Burn It Down" on the opening track, you get the feeling that here is a band not prepared to hide their innermost emotions, but instead, through the vocal pyrotechnics of enigmatic frontman Kevin Rowland, thrust the listener in amongst their largely dissatisfied thoughts through a barrage of musically and lyrically distinctive tracks. The complexity of the musical arrangements is evident from the off, and continues throughout - there's anger at unfulfilment in Tell Me When The Lights Turn Green, salutes to inspirational heroes such as in Geno, even poetic lines of anti-love in Love Part One, and to top it all a ferocious cry to wannabe hipsters in "There There My Dear", to whom Rowland chaotically explains, "You Know The Only Way To Change Things Is To Shoot Men Who Arrange Things".
It's startling, and a little worrying, to think that such a ridiculously unique and musically innovative band will mostly be remembered for their later smash "Come On Eileen" - this album truly belongs in any collection. (Record Runner)

The first of the three disparate Dexys masterpieces and one of the greatest UK debuts ever, this was – with hindsight – the bridge between punk and new romanticism. Upon its 1980 release it just sounded weird: brazen yet beautiful, both lovingly retro and caustically original. Kevin Rowland had growled in Midlands punk bands but now felt an epiphany. Soul, he decided, was the best way to channel dissent and desire. He recruited musicians who could actually play – and play horns – and layered lyrics over shapes mapped out by Stax and Motown.
The pulsating result opened up new rooms in the house of groove, yet it’s Rowland’s persona which dominates. His stressed, committed vocals and tumbling torrents of words remind one how rarely we hear visionary auteurs in pop. Even in 2010, moments here scrape the dust from your ears. (A second disc offers numerous radio sessions and demos.) It just so happens that it’s the least brilliant of the hallowed Dexys triptych, yet Too-Rye-Ay and Don’t Stand Me Down reached giddying zeniths.
Rife with "you-talkin’-to-me?" attitude, its chart hits were staccato stomp Geno and the (superior) There, There My Dear, in which Rowland rants at an "anti-fashion" phoney who affects to like Sinatra. (Like many Rowland-isms, this was misunderstood – he loves Sinatra.) Burn It Down (nee Dance Stance) opens with a radio playing snippets of dinosaur rock, punk and even The Specials before it’s flicked off and the horn trio urge you to "welcome the new soul vision". Rowland is in his element railing against perceived sleights: his causes include the Irish, literature and a hunger for R-E-S-P-E-C-T. While the octet’s instrumentals and covers are sharp, the slower, introspective, narcissistic numbers are the bigger clue that here was a major voice. In I’m Just Looking and I Couldn’t Help It If I Tried, Rowland becomes a white existential Otis, chiefly by sheer willpower and self-belief.
Doubt was to disturb him, as it does all great artists. This though was the sound of a soul released from a straitjacket. While his then Two Tone rivals will always read as prose, this still blazes as poetry.

TEENAGE FANCLUB - Grand Prix '95 + Bonus B-Sides (Australian Deluxe Edition) @320

For all of the brilliance of records like Bandwagonesque and the underrated Thirteen, at times Teenage Fanclub seemed little more than a showcase for the laconic melodic genius of Norman Blake -- fairly or not, the songwriting contributions of bandmates Gerard Love and Raymond McGinley suffered mightily by comparison, mere filler when stacked alongside Blake-penned marvels like "The Concept" and "Norman 3." That said, the superb Grand Prix is perhaps the truest group effort in the Fannies' catalog -- more than ever before, their democratic approach truly bears fruit, and it's indicative of the disc's uniform excellence that the first Blake composition, the lovely "Mellow Doubt," doesn't even surface until track three, by which time McGinley's "About You" and Love's harmony-rich "Sparky's Dream" have already firmly established the set's ragged-but-right tenor. While new drummer Paul Quinn fails to recreate the buoyantly reckless abandon of the sacked Brendan O'Hare, Grand Prix otherwise captures complete creative synergy -- in particular, "Don't Look Back" is Love's watershed moment, a gorgeously wistful love song highlighted by wittily lovelorn lyrics like "I'd steal a car to drive you home," as good a pick-up line as anything in the annals of rock & roll. Not everything works (McGinley's "Verisimilitude" goes nowhere fast) and Blake's contributions are still the highlights ("Neil Jung" and "I'll Make It Clear" are simply perfect pop songs), but Grand Prix is ultimately the product of a band at the peak of its collective powers, not as much a landmark as Bandwagonesque but every bit as good on its own terms. BOB DYLAN - The Times They Are A-Changin' (1964, MFSL 2015) @320

Dylan's first album comprised entirely of original compositions, the Times They Are A-Changin' is a solemn, often dark album depicting the unrest and discomfiting nature of the times. In many ways it is quintessential early Dylan with traditional protest songs, such as the trademark title track, following on from Freewheelin's 'Blowin' In The Wind', alongside other powerful and cutting songs of social injustice ('Only a Pawn in Their Game', The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll and With God On Our Side.'). Among the topical grimness, however, are some beautiful songs, including 'Boots of Spanish Leather' and 'One Too Many Mornings. 'It is an album reflecting uncertain times, and it is a turning point in his career; his Another Side follow-up a year later would see a much lighter and more humorous Dylan. With some of the most important Dylan songs ever recorded, this is an essential part of any music fan's collection. Columbia. 2005.
