If comedy is tragedy happening to someone else, then deep Southern soul is tragedy happening to someone with a terrific rhythm section. Although the late O.V. Wright was never a huge star--the closest he came was "Eight Men, Four Women," a No. 4 R&B hit in 1967--he's remembered as the quintessential deep-soul moaner, an intense, gospel-trained singer who could make romantic torment sound like the agonies of the damned, and like it was worth it anyway.
Wright collaborated with most of the Memphis soul greats, notably producer Willie Mitchell, guitarist "Teenie" Hodges, and impresario-songwriter Don Robey; you can hear the way he milked every vowel for emotional overload inspired the young Al Green. And, although he never struggled with the spiritual/secular divide as publicly as Green, he began and ended his career singing gospel.
