I think Ian was a genius poet/wordsmith. I found I could relate easily to him as the rabbit that came out of his north was the same spiel as we spoke and often mentions local places in east London and Essex, seems like he was one of our own (even though he was from sarf London)

Based on Elmore Leonard’s Rum Punch, Jackie Brown is the film that proved QT could actually be a grown-up if he wanted to be. It’s by far his greatest work, a masterful blend of writing and cinematic storytelling that neither Quentin, nor pretty much anyone else, has managed to emulate since. Even though it more than sixtupled its $12 mil budget, Jackie Brown was considered a flop- but what wouldn’t have been after the worldwide lovefest of Pulp Fiction? Even critics, in yet another example of how useless they are, failed to acknowledge the subtle brilliance found in the film. It wasn’t flashy, like Pulp Fiction– it wasn’t cutesy, or ironic, or even revisionist; caught by surprise, the critics gave it a lukewarm response, and the Oscars basically ignored the film, which gave Tarantino a sharp lesson: give the people what they want: lots of stylish violence, lots of hip one-liners, lots of great music. Don’t worry about telling a story- just worry about looking cool.
Had that not happened, it’s possible that Tarantino could have avoided his creative decline. Somewhere on Earth 2 there’s a Quentin that embraced his strengths and continued to find great stories to adapt into meaty cinematic feasts. Jackie Brown does all of this perfectly: his beloved dialogue is still there, but it emanates out of real characters, characters you care about with all sorts of nuanced traits and human foibles. Jackie is a woman past her prime, still gorgeous and headstrong, but with few economic prospects ahead of her thanks to her race and gender. Played by Pam Grier, her character is a stand-in for Grier’s own career. Quentin loves throwing old forgotten actors into lead roles, but never has he nailed it as well as he does by putting the great Robert Forster as Grier’s co-lead. Handing the spotlight to two older, seasoned actors is no gimmick in this case- it’s a creative masterstroke, and their on-screen chemistry is even sexier because they’re older and experienced. We could go on and on about the actors going against type here- De Niro playing a mostly-stoned ex-con, Sam Jackson playing a big-talking but basically second-rate gangster, Michael Keaton playing the “good cop” who’s just a little too eager to be your pal. It’s QT doing what he loves to do- but with a solid story, he finally has a focus to do it in.
Quentin’s one-liners are everywhere, but here, they enrich the characters. “I don’t trust Melanie, but I can trust Melanie to be Melanie” is not just a great line, it reveals pages about who Ordell and Melanie are as people in one succinct line. Jackie Brown is slow paced, but so are his other films- the difference here is that the pacing gives you a chance to get to know the characters better, which builds an emotional connection that hits you hard when something (good or bad) happens to them down the line.
Tarantino’s music choices, too, which have always been on-point, go beyond mere nostalgia here. Gone are the ironic surf-rock nods to the past; instead, we get a cohesive and legitimate Soul mixtape, where songs like the Delfonics’ “Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind This Time)” take on true heart-stirring significance and become part of the emotional storyline.
Though there are plenty of elements and callbacks to Pam Grier’s Blacksploitation 70’s classics (everything from the title name and font to the music being used) this is most definitely not a Blaxploitation film- it simply draws inspiration from the era to create something different. Everything Tarantino loves to do is employed in Jackie Brown for a good narrative reason, rather than just because it seems cool. The result is a satisfying and mature work by a legit filmmaking talent.

I'd like to dive back in (after a phase in my 20s forty years ago!) but the number of recordings and trying to decide what's the best rated etc etc is daunting.

Always enjoy your selections, especially when you champion rare/weird cinema, but I'm truly chuffed that you posted JACKIE BROWN today. Couldn't agree with your assessment more -- of the film, or of QT's career. IMO, it's the only masterpiece from one of the world's most overrated filmmakers.

If you're prepared to pay the exorbitant cost of their file host (there are no free downloads), Israbox is the best for all types of music. If not, these are the classical music blogs I visit. There are a lot more listed in the blogrolls at some of them, but as I don't like opera or much late 19th century to now music, I avoid most of them.
NOTE: Most of these sites don't post the most recent releases.

I'm searching for the early pre-hard bop material. Most Bop and Hard Bop are just too frantic for me. I can appreciate what they did but my old ears can't handle it. Besides, my wife would throw me out after listening to just a little hard-bop!
