In a way this is a small masterpiece in the pop-punk/power-pop genre, the album from 1981 by Holly & The Italians is a bit like the best album Blondie anno 1978 never recorded, excellent songs all the way, a bit sad that this group was so short lived.

Butterboy has an expanded soundtrack for "1971" on his site that is much more in depth , the show itself is not that interesting,as with most streaming series ,it drags on and on far too long, could very easily have been edited down to be a great movie or more limited series, my opinion

Haven't watched it, but I know it is based on a book and a work by a journalist. It's his opinion entirely.
Having been there at that time, I put The arrival of the SUN Artists in the 50s, The Beatles Stones and Dylan in the early 60's and the amazing artists who released albums in 1968/69 as more 'Music that changed the world'.

I can't say something about this TV-serie. But I've seen a lot of similiar productions in England and Germany. They are all the same, they handle with the big names and the usual stuff. The reason is very simple:
1. The material is available in their archives.
2. TV + Broadcasting companies are not innovative. They send their crews to those events where all the people are, where it's commercial and is no risque to getting quotes when finally broadcasting.
3. One of the very few exceptions is 'Rockpalast', Germany, WDR. But even when they make a documentation for ex. about 'Krautrock' or 'Prog', you always see the usual faces and bands and the typical music. Nothing extraordinary for a person who is only close to the theme and nothing at all for an expert. But an immediate impact and recognition value of all people whose first thoughts are: PROG, oh yes, YES, Genesis, King Crimson. They'll get what they've expected.(And topday, at least those combination of names, like Prog + YES + Genesis, etc is generating MORE clicks.
4. I could produce a 'Krautrock-serie' with very strange material, but the truth would be, the TV stations won't have any pictures or clips of these bands for a TV-production.

Musically, "1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything" is a crashing bore. All the expected faces are there: Bowie, Lennon, Marvin Gaye, Jim Morrison, Sly Stone, Carole King and Elton John (deary me!). It follows a typical ‘rockist’ narrative with prog getting the usual thumbs down and jazz-rock/Krautrock heard as background music only. That said, the contextual stuff is quite interesting: FBI surveillance of the counter-culture, the Black Panthers, plus an unexpected segment on ‘An American Family’, one of the first ‘reality’ shows. This makes it just about worth watching.

Thanks for your posts about the 1971 TV series, you have confirmed everything I thought about the series, so I think I will skip watching it altogether, but I'm curious about The Black Panthers and the 'family' of course, maybe that parts went on you tube in a while.
Kind of sad when you make such a mammoth project about a certain musical year, and completely ignore really big influences that influenced current scenes. I mean today (and the last ten years), if you listen to alternative rock music, their biggest influences are the German kraut rock, and some English underground from the same year and period. I mean, there aren't many young bands from the last ten years that remind you of John Lennon, Little Feat, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Rolling Stones, T. Rex, etcetera (absolutely nothing short of these artists). But the 1971 series seems (according to your explanations) to be mostly about nostalgia for those who were there in 1971 and who had a moderate interest in music. It would have been more fun if the different programs were divided into different genres (and maybe continents)?

Thanks for a great post. I agree with you completely on every point, and it is really sad that the program creators are burying large parts of the musical treasure for posterity. And as you write, the German scene was great from the end of the sixties and a decade (at least) forward when it comes to rill rock, hard rock, prog, kraut and jazz. It's a shame that there hasn't been a serious documentary series about the German scene. I'm not overly familiar with prog rock, but over the years I've preferred the German scene from the seventies to the English one (with Genesis, Gentle Giant, Yes, King Crimson, etcetera)
