Some of the musicians who "grew up" in the big bands were looking for new sounds. This is how BeBop came about in the early 1940s. The best-known BeBop representatives were Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Both developed a new sound of jazz, which today is seen as the cornerstone of "modern jazz". However, swing remained the main component of jazz music, even if it was no longer necessarily aimed at danceability.
In the dance halls of the blacks, swing was followed by rhythm and blues as popular dance music. The best-known representative is the saxophone player and bandleader Louis Jordan, who played in Chick Webb's big band until 1938.
By combining rhythm and blues with gospel, artists such as B. Ray Charles in the 1950s, the soul music.
