With The Galileo 7 on pandemic hiatus – like every other band in the world - the chance for the two of us to record some unexpected and sometimes out of character cover versions with accompanying videos to entertain our friends and local musicians was too good an opportunity to pass up. The theme rules challenged participants to attempt songs that might be outside of their musical comfort zone, come up with decent versions of personal favourites or sometimes bend an odd choice of song into shape. Our attempts vary from respecting the original version to moulding them to what might be called the characteristic sound of our band(s), and at least one of them may be considered a travesty by some… We’ll leave you to guess which! The range of artists we’ve covered here ranges from Buzzcocks to John Denver, via Haircut 100 and The Stranglers…
We were persuaded to put out two of the songs on a very limited-edition lathe-cut single during the summer of 2020, so when we had about 40 minutes of music, plus an unused bonus track, we knew the next logical step for any self-respecting DIY indie muso is to release an album. When this difficult period is consigned to the status of a fading shared nightmare, we hope that this collection can still be enjoyed as a decent set of cover versions. Who knows, maybe it might even induce a rare example of pandemic nostalgia!
