...This is the third collection of music heard on Dylan's Theme Time Radio Show. Like the other volumes, Dylan is not heard anywhere on this set. While his insights and comments were informative, insightful, and fun-the quality of the music makes up for Dylan's absence. The music spans the 20's through the 50's, with an emphasis on the 50's. The collection encompasses country, blues, jazz, pop, r & b, rockabilly, and folk music.Among the well known artists are The Carter Family, Mose Allison, Muddy Waters, Bob Wills, Elvis Presley, George Jones, Miles Davis, and Billy Lee Riley, among others. But its the relatively unknown artists that add depth and interest to this collection. THE MARDI GRAS LOUNGERS, THE MARIGOLDS, THE HONEY BEARS, Lord Lebby, Baron Lee, and others all contribute worthwhile music. Of the three sets, this volume contains more recognizable artists than the other two. But don't think this is simply a rehash of well known tunes. Some will be familiar to anyone who listens to a wide variety of genres, while others might be surprising. But for the listener not familiar with the early works by these artists, this set will be a treasure chest of good music.
This volume (and the other two), contain a vast amount of good/great American roots music from many genres and eras. This series gives a good overview of music during this time period, using both well known and many relatively unknown songs by a good array of period artists. Its refreshing sound and honest, straight forward approach is a breath of fresh air-where else would you hear much of this music? Listening to this music is to take a trip back in time to a different America-and that could be a good thing. (AMAZON)
