Cars and Trains - both of these subjects have been worked into countless hillbilly, rock'n'roll and blues songs about life on the road as a trucker, hot rod racing in battered automobiles, and of course Route 66.
This 4 CD collection brings it all together, a phenomenal package of great - and great sounding - tunes. The other thing I must note about this is that it's incredibly fun to listen to. The 2 CDs comprising the "Cars" section are, simply put, some of the liveliest, most good-humored records ever made. The set kicks off with "Hot Rod Race", the 1951 Arkie Shibley hit that gave birth to an entire sub-genre of novelty road-race songs. Shibley actually recorded and released 5 different variations on the song during 1951, and all are included here (artfully sequenced across the 2 CDs), along with terrific covers by Jimmie Dolan and Red Foley. And that's just the beginning - I'm not going to go on at length, because if you've read this far and you still trust me, you'll buy this ASAP. The packaging of the set is just swell, too. Very attractive, with a 48 page booklet (in English and German, 24 pages each. How cool is that?) (Amazon)

What a great concept collection, especially for a child of the '50s and '60s. Thanks so much for your continued thoughtful consideration. Good wishes,
