Countless gospel fans put the Golden Gate Quartet on a pedestal for their energetic and earthy harmonizing, but an obscure group recording as the Jubalaires accomplished the same feats on their '40s sides. Yes, the Golden Gate was a heavy influence (the two groups even featured in a similar version of "Ezekiel" or "Ezekiel Saw the Wheel"), but since both groups' achievement was so rare and so sublime, any imitators are definitely welcome. The Jubalaires specialized in Bible songs, assigning their bass lead (usually Jasper Edwards) explication of the text while the rest of the group harmonized closely but energetically in the background. Highlights of this compilation, which includes a raft of Capitol releases, include another Ezekiel story, "Dese Bones Gwine Rise Agin," as well as "Sampson and Delilah," "John Saw the Number," and "Wade in the Water." Anyone who loves the early, earthier gospel quartets like the Golden Gate Quartet or the Dixieaires will find that the Jubalaires taste of manna from heaven. John Bush, Allmusictrax:
