"THE BEST OF RED TOP RECORDS" Vol. 1

Thirty obscure tracks from Philadelphia's Red Top Records, a local company that recorded some of the city's young hopefuls between 1957 and the early 1960's. The Quin-Tones' "Down the Aisle of Love" charted nationally, but most of these selections were rarely if ever heard outside Philly. Outtakes, unreleased tracks, and sides recorded under Red Top's umbrella and leased to other companies pad the track listing. Volume 1 includes three rare ones by Donnie Elbert ("Mommie's Gone," "For Sentimental Reasons," and "Someday," released on Jalynne Records in 1961); "Blue Star" by Harold Melvin (later of the Blue Notes, a 1961 release on 20th Century Records; and Joe Tex's ultra-rare blues ballad "Goodbye My Love." The Four Naturals' tracks are pure pop.by Andrew Hamilton, Allmusic
