Along with the skinhead reggae tracks I began posting yesterday, these early Jamaican deejay tunes could have ended up in with the 'Early Reggae', being from roughly the same early 70s period, but I decided to separate them into more specific genres...
Although not the first to do it, U Roy caused a sensation in 1970 with a run of 45s in Jamaica that would help popularise and legitimise on record the dancehall art of chatting over a mic over an already familiar rhythm or melody. The role of the deejay (or toaster) would no longer be confined to the dancehall... deejays from then on would become the mouthpieces of their generation, true voices of the people, the connection to the dancehall giving them a relevance and accessibility not necessarily afforded to Jamaican singers and groups. Since it's inception, the style's popularity has gone from strength to strength to the point where by the time the 80s dawned, it had become the dominant form of vocal expression in Jamaican popular music. With the odd exception, these comps cover the period 1970-1973. Rocksteady songs from 4 or 5 years previous were often the backing tracks of choice during this early phase before the rootsier dubbier sounds take over from the mid 70s.

Snailhouse
Snailhouse was the musical project of Canadian singer-songwriter, guitarist and producer Michael Feuerstack, based in Montréal. He began releasing music as Snailhouse in the 1990s and developed a distinctive style that combines intimate singer-songwriter writing with indie rock and experimental guitar work. He retired the Snailhouse name around 2012 and has since continued recording and performing under his own name, while also collaborating with artists such as Arcade Fire, Julie Doiron, Land of Talk and Bell Orchestre.
1 - Snailhouse - Lies on the Prize (2008)
… was recorded in a converted church studio outside Montréal by Jeremy Gara of Arcade Fire, with Feuerstack playing most of the instruments. Its thirteen songs combine warm acoustic textures, guitar-driven indie rock and subtle experimental elements, with Feuerstack’s thoughtful songwriting and understated vocals at the centre.

Here's another one by Seth! Multibird is a band project led by Seth Faergolzia, growing out of his earlier work with the experimental folk group Dufus and his 100 Songs project. The project developed into a quartet featuring Faergolzia alongside Shaun Jones, Dominic Marini and Stan Martinelli, with the lineup later expanding and changing for recordings and performances. Musically, Multibird combines anti-folk, freak-folk, experimental rock and playful theatrical elements, moving between energetic full-band passages, intimate songs and unusual vocal arrangements.

… was released during their first European tour in 2019 and contains ten tracks showcasing the band’s playful and unconventional approach to songwriting. As a tour-only release, the CD-R represents a small and personal document of Multibird’s early period and their first musical journey through Europe. The tracks are not identical to those on their debut CD ‘Multibird’ and two tracks (“New Jetpack” & “Frog Pond”) seem to be exclusive to this 2019 tour CD-R.
