MICKEY BAKER "Session Man & Performer" Vol. 1

Here is great collection of Mickey Baker's great work. (He just passed away November 27, 2012.) If you asked me, and I know you didn't, but if you did, I'd say Mickey "Guitar" Baker is the greatest guitarist in rock'n'roll history. Bob Quine agreed with me. (The Hound Blog)
Of all the guitarists who helped transform rhythm & blues into rock & roll, Mickey Baker is one of the very most important, ranking almost on the level of Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley. The reason he isn't nearly as well known as those legends is that a great deal of his work wasn't issued under his own name, but as a backing guitarist for many R&B and rock & roll musicians. Baker originally aspired to be a jazz musician, but turned to calypso, mambo, and then R&B, where the most work could be found. (Allmusic)

Guantanamo Baywatch "Postcard from the Tar Pitz" 2010 - 12"/45rpm EP

Conjuring up a swampy fusion of surf, garage rock, and rockabilly that suggests the Cramps hitting the beach midway through a drunken bender, Guantanamo Baywatch are a group from Portland, Oregon determined to bring good, trashy fun back to rock & roll...
...Guantanamo Baywatch were formed in 2009 by guitarist Jason Powell and bassist Chevelle Wiseman; Powell, originally from Seattle, coined the name for a fanzine piece, and liked it enough that he asked his friend Wiseman (who had moved to Portland from Palo Alto, California) to join a new band that would use the handle. Wiseman, who had taken cello lessons as a girl, was drafted to play bass, while their friends Nina and Cole filled out the lineup on second guitar and drums. However, Nina and Cole's presence in the band was short-lived, and after Devin Trainer became the band's new drummer, they opted to continue as a trio. By the fall of 2010, Trainer was out of the group, and with Chris Scott (another California transplant and a former surfer) behind the drums, Guantanamo Baywatch finally had their definitive lineup. Releasing a self-titled album that quickly went out of print, Guantanamo Baywatch began touring aggressively through the Pacific Northwest and up and down the West Coast, earning a reputation for their manic live shows, gloriously tacky stage wear, and enthusiastically greasy approach to surf music. In 2011, they signed with Portland garage punk label Dirtnap Records, and the band's first album for Dirtnap, Chest Crawl, appeared in the spring of 2012. The group jumped to Suicide Squeeze Records for its third long-player, 2015's Darling... It's Too Late. For their fourth album, Guantanamo Baywatch expanded to a quartet, with second guitarist Jordan Owen debuting on the group's 2017 release Desert Center.

The Solarflares "Can Satisfy You" 2003

The Solarflares return with their 4th album on their own Own-Up label, following last year’s LP on Big Beat – and it’s a collection of covers and live tracks with the odd new track and alternate take from previous albums…
...It all starts with a new track, ‘Inside Of A Dream’, a current highlight of the band’s set and a typical Graham Day masterpiece with a crunching guitar riff and lyrics that build up to a chorus that remain in your head before it merges into a cover of possibly The Monkees’ finest moment in ‘Valerie’.
Wimple Winch’s ‘Save My Soul’ is probably the ultimate freakbeat track and I doubt many could do the track justice – no surprise that The Solarflares are one of the few who could, and aside from the guitar riff, the haunting organ of Parsley comes to the fore.
The first of 3 live tracks follow with ‘Miles Away’, originally on ‘That Was Then And So Is This’, the band’s 2nd album. Another Graham Day original, the live cut is from a blistering performance at the tail end of last year. Then a trip back to The Prisoners’ ‘A Taste Of Pink’ album, and a dust-down for ‘Creepy Crawlies’. It still retains the rawness of the original and shows how well these songs stand up 21 years later.
The Seeds’ ‘Satisfy You’ is covered next before the 2nd LP is raided again for an alternate take on ‘Get It Together’ and the 2nd live track ‘Suckin’ Out My Insides’. There’s not a great deal of difference between the 2 versions of ‘Get It Together’, though a little heavier on the organ, whilst ‘Suckin’ Out My Insides’ sees the band in full flow at the Buffalo Bar Islington, with their energetic live sound captured perfectly.
The Ramones’ ‘Glad To See You Go’ is tackled next followed by a new take on last year’s excellent single, ‘Open Your Eyes’. A great Who-like number, ‘Just Wanna Be Bad’, the 3rd live track on the album, is again full of power, energy and anger and builds up to a feedback crescendo. The quality of the live tracks makes me wonder why they don’t issue a live LP.
The album finishes with 2 more covers, Fire’s ‘Father’s Name Is Dad’ and ‘Hold On’, which sees Parsley take lead vocal and let loose on the keyboard.
It’s more or less a fan club album and is only currently available from Detour Records. It is, however, well worth tracking down for some interesting covers, great live cuts and especially ‘Inside Of A Dream’. - Reviewed by Dave Edwards

MICKEY & SYLVIA "Love Is Strange & Other Hits" 1956-1958

Unless you're a major R&B collector, it's likely you've never heard anything by this duo besides "Love Is Strange," their only major hit (and a great one).
With 20 cuts from 1956-1960, this disc reissues the bulk of their most interesting work. "Love Is Strange" will remain their most memorable tune after you've heard this, but on the whole, this is way-above-average '50s R&B/rock. If you're hungering for more great solos like the ones in "Love Is Strange," you'll find some here, especially in "There Oughta Be a Law" and the instrumental "Shake It Up," although Baker's virtuosity doesn't dominate most of the songs. Some of these tunes are routine doo wop, but a little over half the material is pretty strong, ranging from the calypso-rock they're best remembered for to ballads to straight-ahead R&B shouters, with King Curtis on sax.
