The Prisoners "A Taste Of Pink" 1983 + "There's a Time" 1983 - 12"/45rpm EP

...one of the most important Mod / Garage Beat Albums ever!!!
Lesser-known purveyors of the "Medway Delta" sound, Graham Day's Prisoners/Prime Movers, alongside Billy Childish's myriad combos, butted their way into prominence through sheer persistence in the '80s Chatham (the city between London and Canterbury where the Medway River meets the North Sea) chapter of the Great Garage R&R Manifesto. Less spontaneous than Mr. C and considerably more of a popsmith (in the Jeff Conolly sense), Day's songs are uniformly well crafted, with fully dynamic backing as opposed to Billy's headlong drunken bashing. The sixteen-hours-in-a-studio extravaganza A Taste of Pink! comes closest to a melding of the two Medway styles, both raw / immediate and hooky / heady.

"There's a Time" 1983 - 12"/45rpm EP
The Prisoners formed in 1980 when Allan Crockford, Graham Day and Johnny Symons formed a band at school in Rochester. It was pretty basic stuff, Graham on guitar, Allan on bass and Johnny on drums, mixing punk and 60s influences, rehearsals at parents' homes and maybe the odd gig in between exams. 1981 saw the band take things more seriously, and the band expanded to a four piece with the addition of Bruce Brand from the Milkshakes as a second guitarist, which brought with it a stronger R&B flavour. This arrangement didn't last long and the far more important discovery for the year was Graham's voice as a songwriter. - By Dean Rudland

Graham Day & The Forefathers "Good Things" 2014

The crucial ingredients of The Prisoners, Prime Movers, Solarflares and The Gaolers extracted and squeezed into one stripped down power trio…
Graham Day, Allan Crockford and Wolf Howard have been intermittently blasting out their muscular version of Medway garage-rock ™ in various combinations and guises over a period of more than 30 years, releasing dozens of albums between them. Graham and Allan were in The Prisoners (82-86), before forming The Prime Movers with Wolf in 1988, releasing 3 albums before they split in 1993. The trio were re-united in 1999 as the Solarflares, releasing another 5 albums until once again calling it a day in 2004. They also found time to play in various pairings over that period in the original line-up of The James Taylor Quartet and Goodchilde (Allan and Wolf), and Billy Childish’s Buff Medways (Graham and Wolf). These days Graham and Wolf also play cinematic instrumentals in The Senior Service, and Allan leads psych-popsters The Galileo 7 (both bands also on Damaged Goods).
The three re-united as a live band in 2013. The Forefathers formed around the idea that the time was right for rifling through the Graham Day Songbook and delivering a ‘best of…’ set: stripped down live versions of the best of The Prisoners, The Prime Movers, The Solarflares and Graham’s most recent band, The Gaolers. Recent gigs have proved that time has not dimmed their fire, energy and passion. If anything, their live performances have been more ferocious than ever. One school of thought says that The Forefathers are essentially a ‘tribute act’ – a tribute to themselves and their shared musical history… if that is true, they are the purest and best tribute act in existence – no one delivers a Graham Day song like Graham Day, Allan Crockford and Wolf Howard.
‘Good Things’ was recorded in that initial joyful rush of re-discovering old favourites and forgotten classics in 2013. Backing tracks were completely live at their rehearsal room and one-take vocals were added later. For this timely re-release, three tracks have been added to the original running order: ‘Love Me Lies’ and ‘30-60-90’, previously only available on a long sold out 45 on State Records, and a version of Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Freedom’. All three cuts were recorded at the same time as the rest of the album, but the latter tune has lain in the vaults since its completion.

Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Dig the crazy sounds bustin' out of yo' speakers fillin' the room with the grease and prime raunch of the mighty Lyres! This record blows 90% of what passed for garage rock in the 80's away and threatens to inflict total destruction on lame-o acts like the Hives and Strokes! Mono and his crew can take almost any 60's tune and turn it into pure, souled-out gold! Listen as The Lyres give tunes like "soapy", "love man" and "swing shift" the Mono treatment and come out wailin'! Dig it. - By jason gilmour (Toronto, Ontario)
This recordings are as vital as Jonathan Richman' Precise Modern Lovers Order, with the essential difference that Jeff Connolly and his band are still doing the same music today, in the quest of the Grail of the perfect garage sound. These "Early years" are great because you can verify there that when the Lyres are inspired as they are some evenings, they are the most fantastic rockin' band one can imagine. THIS RECORD IS A PURE NUGGET and its speeds up a 100 miles per hour. You can nearly feel the sweat beads coming of Jeff's hair to your face. A great collection of classic Lyres songs and covers, they are all there, plus some "dialogues" with famous persons in the audience like Franck Rowe of the Classic Ruins, the Lyres are covering "Geraldine" so cleverly it sounds like a product of their own. Jim Topper is introducing the band and exalting his admiration speaking of its "majesticity". Bob Colby, famous for the "boob" - see the Real Kids first album - asks for "let's get a Party" and of course Jeff Monoman is treating the audience as if he was giving the ultimate party of the sixties.
What is very interesting in these recordings is the addition of very early gigs parts. Listening to this makes you feel like you cannot believe it, this transition from DMZ to the Lyres was like some evanescent secret which we can discover here.. Just hear "long gone" and its sequel "gone gone" , its incredibly speeding up tempo , the Lyres were really there the knights of the soda fountains.. Graham Day & The Gaolers "Triple Distilled" 2008

I bought this album after hearing "Something About You Girl" on the radio and the band's Myspace page. It's got a great melody line, lyric, and a hook in the chorus that'll makes you want to hear it again and again. Listening to the album, I found twelve more songs as good as that one. These are thirteen great pop / rock compositions, enthusiastically performed in a frantic, raucus niteclub, style...
...I am not familiar with Graham Day, but he's not a kid (see track 1 - "Glad I'm Not Young"). He must have some history in the rock world; the opening vocal lines of "Begging You" are iconic rock and roll. They could have been sung by Gene Vincent in the 50's, Roger Daltrey in the 60's, Iggy Pop in the 70's. I'm not saying this guy belongs in the pantheon of great rock and roll masters -- but I'm wondering why I never heard of him before. These songs are so strong they could have made two or three normal albums for a lesser talent. Here's the formula: dramatic, extended vocal lines, soaring harmonic choruses, wailing guitars, pounding drums and bass, delivered with punk exuberance by a veteran rock singer/songwriter at the top of his game and a tight back up band. Everything works; all the guitar accents and twists are perfect. Each song stands on it's own as an identifiable gem and I've decided on a different favorite after each play. "Pass That Whiskey" with Day on sitar and "Just a Song" provide brief respites from the grungy onslaught, but without slowing the pace. This is one fine rock and roll album.
One criticism: it's not a great production job. The grungy sound mix falls into muddiness on a good audio system. The CD sounded better on my computer speakers than on my hi-fi or even my car stereo. Probably good enough for mp3 though. This material deserved better. Don't let that dissuade you from giving this CD a good listening. - Bob K.

Gitkin’s music exists somewhere between primal, rootsy memory and distant exotic yearning — A dusty bordertown where the familiar blends imperceptibly into the enchantingly foreign...
...After a long and fruitful run as a bandleader with relentlessly touring party-rockers Pimps Of Joytime and a Grammy-nominated country blues collaboration with Cedric Burnside, multi-instrumentalist Brian J set out to “explore tonalities I’d never messed with,” as he puts it. It was a release from “having to write lyrics or involve my voice,” he notes, and so the (mostly) instrumental sound of Gitkin came into being.
Reviews of Gitkin’s first LP grappled with descriptors, tagging it vaguely as “cinematic” and comparing it favorably with Khruangbin. True, the music is largely wordless, emotionally evocative, and guitar driven. But it possesses an alluring alchemy all its own.
Gitkin’s first release, 2018’s well-received Five Star Motel, amply demonstrated his ease with earthy funk and comfortably-cut rhythm. On his new full-length release Safe Passage, the itinerant guitar slinger broadens his already rich palette with melodies informed by Greek and Middle Eastern modalities, Peruvian Chicha and Tuareg Saharan guitar styles. No gimmick, this juxtaposition of gut-bucket blues and funk low-end with unexpectedly twisting lead phrases highlights the intense flavors found in each savory ingredient.
Recorded at his home studio in New Orleans, Safe Passage showcases a new batch of immediately engaging, repeatedly satisfying cuts, ranging from surf exotica (“Cat Nip”) to raunchy roadhouse stompers (“Fools Gold” and “The Drive”) to dreamy vocal cuts “Foot Steps” and “Hold On” to the floating finale of “Safe Passage.”
Gitkin’s production radiates character and warmth, leaning on soft-focus vintage mics, dubby spring reverbs and the quirks of an analog tape machine. Further enhancing the intimate vibe are distinguished guests like Carol C (of Si*Sé), who lends her striking voice to three tracks, including the strutting single “De La,” veteran Chauncey Yearwood (congas) and New Orleans local Clifton “Spug” Smith, who provides a sousaphone low-end on the cumbia-not-cumbia “Spug Life.”

Graham Day & The Gaolers "Soundtrack To The Daily Grind" 2007

For those of you who don't know, Graham Day was the lead singer/guitarist/songwriter of a band called the Prisoners. They hailed from the Medway Delta in England, and put out four amazing albums of guitar-and-organ driven 60s-style garage rock in the mid-1980s. I picked up all of their albums back then, and literally wore out the grooves of the records. Of the many bands I listened to back then, they are one of the few that I have continued to listen to over the years...
…Now, some more great music from Graham Day. This CD at least matches his work with the Prisoners, but with a little harder edge. Great guitar hooks and melodies, no-nonsense production, this man is still in his prime. The music has a retro sound, yet it's original -- I racked my brain trying to come up with bands from the 60s that they resemble, but couldn't think of any, so I guess it's really his sound. Check out the preview of the song "Get Off My Track." If you like that, you'll like the entire CD. - R. DeCarli

Barbacoa is an instrumental surf-rock band from Burlington, Vermont, known for a sound inspired by spaghetti westerns and 1960s cinema. Founded over two decades ago by guitarist and songwriter Bill Mullins, the band also includes Kirk Flanagan (bass) and Jeremy Fredricks (drums).
