Stories from Shamehill "Return Of The Space Mariachis" 2022

At the end of summer, when the days shorten and the nights get longer, the three boys from Stories from Shamehill left the beaches to venture into the desert for a spiritual peyote trip to rediscover themselves in these days of the pandemic...
...This time they did not return. Inquiries with the locals turned up nothing except stories about a white flash in the dead of the night and several UFO sightings. They were gone, wiped off the face of the earth…
Weeks later during Día de Muertos, they suddenly reappeared in front of the Franciscan mission in Santiago de Coyame. In the middle of the party they played a Space Mariachi version of their signature surf music.
They couldn't tell how they got there, and it probably will always remain a mystery what exactly happened to the three hombres, but chances are that the story about their instro trip around the world is hidden in the ten tracks on "Return of the Space Mariachis".

Ìxtahuele "Call of the Islands" 2016

My cats are searching for the birds as I play this record. Delightful! - Leslie Shaw
ÌXTAHUELE is a Swedish exotica band. They come from Gothenburg; a damp, foggy harbor town that ever since its founding in the early 17th century has been an international melting pot, associated with exotic, faraway destinations ever since the days of the East India Trading Companies.

This music is dedicated to the tradition of Johnny Diego's Rock 'n' Roll Free Sunday!

The Men In Gray Suits "Shark Bait" 2020

Of course this band releases something the same year as The Men in Grey Suits. The worst thing is that neither should be ignored! This group is the more traditional surf record of the two, but very loud and in-your-face with their sound, particularly with some saxophone that has that blastin' feel like in the Revels' Comanche. All four tracks are great.

Indy Tumbita & The Voodoo Bandits "Cocodrilia" (Cumbia Surf a la Tumbita's Way) 2021

At the end of 2015, Indy Tumbita (Vigo, 1977), guitarist for bands such as Los Duques de Monterrey, Thee Tumbitas, Pedrito Diablo & Los Cadáveras, and Joao Tomba, began working on his first solo instrumental album, "Bay Vibrations." An album that draws influences from the Spaghetti Western, the Amazonian sound, flamenco, and jazz, always with Indy Tumbita's characteristically fiery and vibrant style...
...For the live performance of this work, Indy Tumbita surrounded himself with a series of outlaws known as The Voodoo Bandits. Dangerous individuals with a talent for black magic who fit the guitarist from Vigo like a glove.
In 2018, Indy Tumbita & The Voodoo Bandits entered the studio to record their first 7" ("Surfing Halloween" / "Love from Mars"), two new instrumental gems that will delight fans of Dick Dale, Santo & Johnny, The Ventures, and Link Wray, to name a few of the genre's biggest names.
After the single, a live EP (New River, London), and several Christmas EPs, they began working on the songs that will be included in their first album, "Cocodrilia: Cumbia Surf a la Tumbita's Way," some of which have already been uploaded online in recent months.
Now, along with other new songs, the label Family Spree Records is releasing the Vigo band's debut LP. An album influenced by chicha and the psychedelic cumbia of bands like Los Destellos and Los Mirlos, without abandoning their love for surf legends like Dick Dale and Link Wray. From an album recorded almost live at their favorite bar, "A Casa de Arriba" (Vigo), which they struggle to leave, and mixed at Eclipsis Studio by Paco Serén.
Amazonian sound from the Rías Baixas? Cumbia del Lagares? Exotic Cumbia Rock? Surf Rock? Instro Chicha?... We can't find any labels for this new sound, but we're sure you won't stop dancing to the beat of the bandits from the city of Vigo.

Perhaps you have not compiled more eclectic, bizarre, bizarre and wonderful at the same time, these 7 volumes with a total of 238 items collected by one J.R. Williams, who in addition to comics and graphic work, which is displayed on their covers is dedicated...

This collection is invaluable as many of these issues were launched only simple and have not been re-edited. Twenty years ago we couldn’t imagine that our little excuse to meet with our surf music friends from around the country would still be happening...

Stories from Shamehill "Royale with Cheese" 2018 + "El Salto Del Jalapeno" 2017 - 7"/45rpm

You know what they call a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in Paris?..
...The iconic scene from Pulp Fiction starring John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2019. The film, and especially the soundtrack, started the 'Third Wave of Surf Music'. 'Stories from Shamehill' has been riding this wave since 2012. After an EP (Same same but different - 2015), live single (Made in Amsterdam - 2016) and a 7 "vinyl single (El Salto del Jalapeño / Queen or Tides - 2017) - recorded in Los Angeles during the California Dreamin 'Tour - is there finally the band's first full-length:' Royale with Cheese '.
At the end of the endless Dutch summer of 2018, Stories from Shamehill’s lady and gentlemen entered the legendary Amsterdam IJland Studio to record eight juicy tracks that would not be out of place on the soundtrack of an obscure Quentin Tarantino movie.
On 'Royale with Cheese' the band will take you on a cinematic journey: from the Californian beaches to the Russian tundra and back. Hard and heavy but also spheric and sultry. You'll dig it the most!

The Men In Gray Suits "Panic at the Pier" 2017

THE MEN IN GRAY SUITS get their name from a 60s surf expression meaning "Sharks" are a hard hitting instrumental surf band from Montreal comprising of Jim "bones" Johnson on lead guitar, David Deias on rhythm guitar, Pascal Lesieur on bass, and Laurent Navarro on drums. Los Surfer Compadres "Los Surfer Compadres in a Psychedelic Western" 2016

One of the things I like about instrumental music is that you're free to craft your own narrative from the music. This is still the case with Los Surfer Compadres' new album, but they've given you a lot of thought pieces to help you along on their album art: surfing with swords, aliens, a cookout, a protest, a bird with a ring on its talon, an angry god...
Indeed the music itself visits spaghetti western, fuzz guitar, a variety of different moods, though there's definitely a pretty solid surf underpinning. "Eyes on the Market" is a slightly goofier track, with light fuzz, farfisa, and guitars drunkenly wailing every which way, one of my favorites. And it's hard to go wrong with a good grit-teeth fuzz track like "Los Más Buscados". There are three vocal tracks on here, but they certainly feel like an exception to the rule -- it's definitely a surf record. - Submitted by Hunter on Tue, 03/08/2016

Par Avion "Perro Avion" 2020

The result of PAR AVION and PERRO AGRADECIDO'S collaborative recording session from early March 2020...
...These "PERRO AVION" tracks were recorded while we were in Mexico City, the morning after Bernard's birthday party at Capitan Gallo when he played with a massive case of food poisoning! Three of the tracks feature the added bonus of our buddy Dusty Watson (SONICS, Dick Dale, Agent Orange, Slacktone) on drums. We are very proud of this EP.

The Rough Shapes "Lost Stations" 2020

"Sitting somewhere between the hazy psychedelia of The Mermen and the jazzy darkness of Big Lazy with perhaps a little more cinematic flair than either, The Rough Shapes have a very exciting EP here. I wasn't aware of their first EP, but giving it a quick listen the recording on this one is a little more pronounced. I like a lot of what's happening on this record, and I love the way it ends." - STORM SURGE OF REVERB
"If dark moody rock-billy is a thing, here it is in all its glory. The Rough Shapes latest release is titled “Lost Stations” and is full of significant flowing melodic songwriting coupled with world-class performances by this guitar, bass, and drums trio of Jeff Kadlic, Colin Almquist and Dan Cartwright. On the surface the music plays, but there are layers of rich textures that continue to reveal themselves upon each deep listen to this awesome new release." - PETE MASON, NYS MUSIC

The Rising Storm "Calm Before..." 1967

"Calm Before... remains one of the finest and most important LPs by a US ’60s group, never mind one that was still attending high school when it was released on the privately-pressed Remnant label......From a cache of moody ballads to highly-charged, all-out flashing teen rock, everything here is broodingly and sensationally played out, including highly-personalised covers of Love’s ‘Message To Pretty’, ‘In The Midnight Hour’ and The Remains’ gold-plated nugget ‘Don’t Look Back’. The album’s mix of deep beat-pop introspection and thoroughly intense modern R&B-instigated rock remains unique among most of their peers’ long-play outings, and thus played a big part in the inordinately strong pull the group would have on many young ’60s-fixated longhairs in the ’80s and ’90s.” - Shindig Magazine

Ìxtahuele "Pagan Rites" 2013

Mystery colored vinyl (a unique and kooky mix-up from an exotic palette) and limited edition of 600 copies only! Pagan Rites is a breathtakingly exotic tone poem that will make any Tiki bar come alive...
...From the mystical realms of a secluded ancient island, rising from the icy spray of the forbidden northern waters, comes the haunting, savage beat of a mysterious and primitive ritual. In this forgotten place, awash with wonder and enigma, echoing with the booming of sharkskin drums and bone rattles, the rock speaks with the voice of the gods. Weaving strange and terrifying tales, and tales of beauty and joy,
The aim of the group is to provide the perfect soundtrack to bring your mind’s eye on a time-traveling, round-the-world trip; taking you to faraway exotic islands, lost lands, and ancient cities – bringing back the Ottoman Empire, Port Royal, or even the mythical continent of Mu.
Ìxtahuele try to push the limits of where they can take you while still staying true to the genre; because after all the true armchair traveler can’t make the Hawaiian Village the destination for every trip, but must also go to the Amazon, Micronesia, the Middle East, the Caribbean, and Indochina. All aboard!

Los Surfer Compadres "Pool Party" 2013

From Monterrey, Mexico comes seven songs and one 20 second intro that features seagulls, waves and a lonely surfer...
...Three of these songs are really good originals. The other four songs are even better covers of Pipeline, Miserlou, Having an Average Weekend, and Walk Don't Run. I love everything here but Miserlou really stands out because it has a short intro featuring a vintage recording of the song followed by a great rendition of the song by Los Surfer Compadres. - John Nunnally

Kreeps "Long Gone Gulch - Original Score" 2021

Original score from the Lopside Animated pilot 'Long Gone Gulch' written by Dom Kreep and performed by Kreeps.
From the producers at Lop Side - 'We knew we didn’t want "Long Gone Gulch" to have a traditional Western soundtrack, and then like destiny, we found the music of Kreeps! The score moves flawlessly through so many different styles: Electronica, jazz funk, horror synth, doo wop, and plenty of beautiful twangy surf rock! Like the classic cartoons of old, the music supports the character’s movements and in another sense, the music itself acts as its own character, giving a voice to the actual world of the Gulch. That is more than what we could have ever hoped for. Listening to this score severed from the actual cartoon is a completely different and satisfying experience on its own. We hope you all enjoy the visceral and energetic music of Kreeps!

The Rough Shapes "Frequency & Vibration" 2017

"Immersive, minimalist, cheeky and non-binding in its referentiality: noir, Morricone, desert psychedelia, Spy and a stinging Munsterslike minor bluesiness. It is concise, meticulous, pretty and weird. “Last Wave” offers maybe the record’s most memorable moody melody, “Social Station” its nastiest. Songs begin with retro evocations and end somewhere else entirely." - John Burdick, Almanac
A salty wave of tasty tangents: dreamy bachelor-pad exotica, noir-ish spy themes, twangy spaghetti Western soundtrack bait, and wordless rockabilly rumbles. "Time to Forget" and "Summer Ends" make for haunting mood music while the torrid twister "Buried Bones" will have you hangin' ten on the Hudson." - Peter Aaron, Chronogram

The High Breaks "Smirk of the Dolphin" 2020

The High Breaks tell stories through vintage tone, surf compositions and are intent on providing universal escapism.
Steam billows up from behind the cliff side turn as the passenger locomotive approaches. You wait with a sea foam gaze and climb eagerly aboard the surf train. Every window is open allowing a salty mist from the nearby shore to climb into your senses. A brief pass through a coastal town turns the collective boogie of beach goers on the boardwalk towards you. You notice the purple-haired adolescent peddling a faded yellow banana seat bicycle and reflect on how much time you saved this morning by sleeping in your wetsuit. Now it’s do or die, time to surf and swim. You cling onto the whirlpool and refuse to sink in. Over your shoulder, on the same wave. The sinister surfer, not far away. The sea turns dark and stormy skies appear. Sweet coconut on the wind now quiets any fear.

Os Tartaros "The First Portuguese Surf-Garage Group 1964-1967" 2020

In the early 1960s, when rock ‘n’ roll started dying in Portugal, a new trend was already here. Hailing from the UK and headed by Cliff Richard, fast upstaged by his supporting band The Shadows, this would be the first ‘British Invasion’...
...An entire generation quickly fell under its influence and all across the country dozens of bands were formed, playing rock-based guitar-driven instrumental songs with catchy tunes that were often adaptations of traditional songs. Like the Killer surf garage tune TARTÁRIA, maybe one the wildest surf tune record in Europe in that era. Oblivious to what was happening abroad, the Portuguese press dubbed them ‘Shadows-influenced instrumental bands’. This was the context in which Os Tártaros were formed in an Oporto garage. Featuring Joaquim Gualter on lead guitar, Alberto Abreu on rhythm guitar and keyboards, Hernâni de Melo on bass and harmonica, and Eduardo Alves on drums, the band began touring the country, performing in associations, fairs, and festivals. The early 60s explosion of Shadows-influenced bands grew substantially stronger when The Beatles came onboard and also benefited from the charitable actions of one man, Gouveia Machado, the owner of a musical instrument store who let young people pay for their guitars and drums by installments. From 1964 onwards, with the advent of new influences and instruments, hundreds of bands followed, not just in Lisbon and Oporto but all across Portugal. Some of the tracks were included in the fabulous compilations, PORTUGUESE NUGGETS, this LP is more than a anthology of all their material, its a historical document from a band that runned againts their fate in a time that playing in a rock band, in the portuguese dictatorship, was like a crime.
