"Do The 45!" Vol. 1152 (2026)

Super fun collection of soul, blues, R&B, instro, and rock 'n' roll from the original 45's. (From my record collection.)
It's just me having fun with my 45's and whatever random record I pull out of the boxes. I will try to give both sides of the 45 unless one side is dull, unbearable or unplayable. I hope you enjoy. (Gyro1966)

Screamin' Jay Hawkins "Blues Shouter" (The Blues Collection Vol 62) 1972

Screamin' Jay Hawkins was the most outrageous performer extant during rock's dawn. Prone to emerging out of coffins on-stage, a flaming skull named Henry his constant companion, Screamin' Jay was an insanely theatrical figure long before it was even remotely acceptable.
Hawkins' life story is almost as bizarre as his on-stage schtick. Originally inspired by the booming baritone of Paul Robeson, Hawkins was unable to break through as an opera singer. His boxing prowess was every bit as lethal as his vocal cords; many of his most hilarious tales revolve around Jay beating the hell out of a musical rival.
Hawkins caught his first musical break in 1951 as pianist/valet to veteran jazz guitarist Tiny Grimes. He debuted on wax for Gotham the following year with "Why Did You Waste My Time," backed by Grimes & His Rockin' Highlanders (they donned kilts and tam o' shanters on-stage). Singles for Timely ("Baptize Me in Wine") and Mercury's Wing subsidiary (1955's otherworldly "[She Put The] Wamee [On Me]," a harbinger of things to come) preceded Hawkins' immortal 1956 rendering of "I Put a Spell on You" for Columbia's OKeh imprint.
Hawkins originally envisioned the tune as a refined ballad. After he and his New York session aces (notably guitarist Mickey Baker and saxist Sam "The Man" Taylor) had imbibed to the point of no return, Hawkins screamed, grunted, and gurgled his way through the tune with utter drunken abandon. A resultant success despite the protests of uptight suits-in-power, "I Put a Spell on You" became Screamin' Jay's biggest seller ("Little Demon," its rocking flip, is a minor classic itself).
Hawkins cut several amazing 1957-1958 follow-ups in the same crazed vein -- "Hong Kong," a surreal "Yellow Coat," the Jerry Leiber/Mike Stoller-penned "Alligator Wine" -- but none of them clicked the way "Spell" had. DJ Alan Freed convinced Screamin' Jay that popping out of a coffin might be a show-stopping gimmick by handing him a $300 bonus (long after Freed's demise, Screamin' Jay Hawkins was still benefiting from his crass brainstorm).
Hawkins' next truly inspired waxing came in 1969 when he was contracted to Philips Records (where he made two albums). His gross "Constipation Blues" wouldn't garner much airplay, but remained an integral part of his legacy for quite a while.
The cinema was a beneficiary of Screamin' Jay's larger-than-life persona in later years. His featured roles in Mystery Train and A Rage in Harlem made Hawkins a familiar visage to youngsters who never even heard "I Put a Spell on You." He died February 12, 2000 following surgery to treat an aneurysm; Hawkins was 70. - Artist Biography by Bill Dahl

"CAN'T STOP LOVIN'" A New Kind Of Mambo Vol. 42

Mambo is a Latin dance of Cuba which was developed in the 1940s when the music genre of the same name became popular throughout Latin America…
...The original ballroom dance which emerged in Cuba and Mexico was related to the danzón, albeit faster and less rigid. In the United States, it replaced rhumba as the most fashionable Latin dance. Later on, with the advent of salsa and its more sophisticated dance, a new type of mambo dance including breaking steps was popularized in New York. This form received the name of "salsa on 2", "mambo on 2" or "modern mambo". - wiki

The Satelliters "What's up with Timothy Dee" 1999

Don't think that anybody here mentioned it before, so let's go... do you know what 's the best 99 garage LP ? the Strollers LP ? the Hellacopters "Grande Rock " ? The Hydromatics "Part Unknown" ? the Hate Bombs "Hunt Down" ? the Solarflares " Psychedelic Tantrum " ?..
...forget them all (well, apart the Strollers !), and go & get the new Satelliters LP on Screaming Apple ("What's Up With..."), you won't believe your ears. They've droped their trashy (and often annoying) sound typical on their stuff on Dionysus, and just released their best lp since their last one on S.Apple. There's something like 12 trax on the lp, and you won't manage to find a shit on that one: all song are wonderfully more catchy, groovy and ass-kicker than ever... a terrific and brain melting mix of garage pop (excellent Remains cover ), garage punk and Misunderstood-like freakbeat. Not to mention that the sleeve is gorgeous... THEE LP of the year, without a doubt !!!! - Sylvain, Bomp, USA, 1999

"Boogaloo Pow Wow" Dancefloor Rendez-Vous In Young Nuyorica

Originally released in 2006 on Honest Jon's, but not previously distributed in North America -- now fully available on CD here for the first time. A scorching compilation which features the brilliant, hybrid array of styles which burned up Latino dancefloors during the '60s in New York...
...The '60s were years of explosive transition for Latin music in New York: in tune with the times of strident political protest and cultural affirmation, new rhythms like the pachanga, boogaloo, típico and salsa signalled significant changes in musical sensibility among a new generation. By the early 1960s, the heyday of the great mambo era was passing, and by the end of the decade, the catch-all phrase salsa had been implanted on the rich variety of styles and rhythms that made up the repertoire. In between, throughout the 1960s, a thousand flowers bloomed in the Latin music field, with the bands conversant in the traditional Afro-Cuban styles of son and guaguancó and cha cha chá, Latin jazz and bolero, while also trying their hand at a range of newly-emerging styles, beginning with the pachanga in the opening years through to boogaloo and shingaling, until the roots sounds of típico as the decade ended. This array of styles came together in those heady years, and the eclectic tastes of those dynamic times are all here, from "Tanga," the first recorded example of Cubop and the classic "Descarga Cachao," to the jaunting guaguancó of Ray Barretto and Bobby Pauneto. But while some of the selections represent the preceding musical generation, and others anticipate the salsa sound of the key Fania years of the early 1970s, the focus here is on the boogaloo and Latin soul sound which was the most characteristic soundtrack of the period. Listen to the two Willie Rosario cuts, "Cool Jerk," and the pieces by Joe Loco and Willie Bobo, and you'll hear the trademarks of the style: the raucous hand-clapping, the party exhortations, the back-beat drumming, the African-American street English -- the result was a crazy, motley style named after the African-American dance craze of the moment, the boogaloo. Boogaloo and related styles of Latin soul were the first real crossover sounds that broke the language and style barriers, and the first to make it onto the Billboard charts as top sellers nation-wide. However, it was a genre not destined to last long, soon eclipsed by the more commercially-durable salsa boom of the early 1970s. But notwithstanding the brief life-span of boogaloo, to this day many of its top hits are loved by dancers everywhere. Other artists include: Manny Corchado, Macito, Tito Rodriguez, Kako, La Playa Sextet, Chuito Velez, Joe Loco, The La Playa Orchestra, Rene Grand And His Combo New York, and Dianne And Carole.

The Untamed Youth "Untamed Melodies" 1996

Awesome organ-heavy surf tunes from the Mid-west! Rockabilly fans should recognize the tall, slightly balding guitar player on the left of the cover - it's retro-rock god Derek "Deke" Dickerson (as he is credited on this album). Fans of Deke's more surf oriented stuff should eat this up. - By Jason Weckerly "rockin' tiki guy" (Long Beach CA)
Just fun short hopping tunes about girls, cars, & beer. these boys from missouri have captured the "surf" sound better than any california band since dick dale, & this mix of obscure covers & retro originals is just the remedy for the schlock radio churns out. maybe eminem wouldnt be as upset as he is if he had listened to a little of this during his formative years. - By mark bychowski (Houston, TX United States)

The Beyonderers "Estimate of the Situation" 2016

I've seen them before in both time and space. They are real and they are good. This music is how you say "Welcome to Earf" to all alien life from a surfboard. - Sean Wright
The Beyonderers are an instrumental trio from Akron, OH. They somehow combine the reverb and twang of 60's surf rock with the distorted attitude of Link Wray and top it all off with the arrangements and guitar pyrotechnics of 80's thrash metal to create something disturbingly new. Perfect music for intense physical activity or midnight drives through near Area 51.

The Satelliters "...Shake, Shake, Shake!" 1998

Digging bands like The Sonics, The Kinks, The Seeds, Remains, Shadows Of Knight, Blues Magoos, The Standells, Kenny & The Kasuals, The Byrds and tons more the band started rehearsing in March 1993 with all the well-known and beloved cover-versions...

"SHAKE DANCE" A New Kind Of Mambo Vol. 41

- wiki

Mickey Baker "The Wildest Guitar" 1959

Despite Baker's well-deserved reputation as one of the most influential guitar players of early rock & roll, The Wildest Guitar was one of the few chances he really got to strut his stuff as a solo artist...
...This entirely instrumental set features keening, sharp, bluesy riffs in much the same distinctive style that gained him fame on "Love Is Strange" and other tunes with Mickey & Sylvia. The choice of material, though, is a bit surprising, favoring some surprisingly cornball standards: "Third Man Theme," "Autumn Leaves," "Lullaby of the Leaves," and Cole Porter's "Night and Day." Baker (who also arranged the album) manages to invest all of these with a snazzy R&B feel and biting solos. And he does actually write four of the 12 tunes himself, on which he fashions the kind of straightforward R&B that one would more likely to expect. This is a pretty good showcase to hear Baker's unadorned virtuosity. But he's really better-appreciated within the context of stronger material, either as half of Mickey & Sylvia or on the innumerable '50s R&B cuts (many on Atlantic) that feature his session work.

The Beyonderers "Fourth Wave" 2014

The Beyonderers are an instrumental trio from Akron, OH. They somehow combine the reverb and twang of 60's surf rock with the distorted attitude of Link Wray and top it all off with the arrangements and guitar pyrotechnics of 80's thrash metal to create something disturbingly new. Perfect music for intense physical activity or midnight drives through near Area 51.

The Untamed Youth "Live from Fabulous Las Vegas Strip! At The Fabulous El Morocco Lounge" 1995

Maybe it wasn't art, but we sure suffered for it. For the Untamed Youth, most of the time it meant riding around in the back of a cold old '68 Oldsmobile hearse eating Spaghettios straight outta the can. In those pre-PULP FICTION days of the late eighties, it also usually meant giving 115% to a bunch of disinterested alternative rockers giving us a look like... "What the HELL are you doing up there?" - Derek "Deke" Dickerson
After years of litigation, negotiation and just plain flat out procrastination Estrus Records presents The Untamed Youth: "Live On The Fabulous Las Vegas Strip!" LP/CD! Recorded October 9, 1992 from the front row center table of the one and only El Morocco lounge, this 20 song blowout captures da Youth at their best, tearin' it up for a packed house of rabid fans and tipsy outta towners, presenting live and wild versions of alla yer Untamed Youth faves as well as a batch of hitherto unheard tunes... and as an added extra bonus this swingin' slab comes packed inna full color cover by poster guru Frank Kozik, based on his original poster designed for the show! Hot Damn! So "dig right in" and "pull up a chair" and you're THERE at the EL Morocco Lounge catching all the action! - estrus

The Cactus Blossom "The Cactus Blossom" 2011

Great new take on the classic country sound. Makes me think I'm in an old country tavern drinking Premium. The brothers that leader this band have great voices, reminiscent of Hank Williams Sr. They also have seasoned players in their band. The pedal-steel player is Randy Broughten, of Trailer Trash and the Gear Daddies. Their fiddler is Mark "Razz" Russell has played with Joe Henry and Mark Olson of the Jayhawks. The bassist is Liz Draper, who has played in Black Blondie and currently Lucy Michelle's Velvet Lapelles. Give them a try, you will not be disappointed. (J. P. LARSON , The Louvin Brothers Monthly)
"An absolute gem - a completely stunning debut album" - Bob Harris, BBC Radio 2

“It's easy enough to phone in a cornball imitation of old country ... It's another thing entirely to live and breathe the craft of writing and singing a good country and western song as The Cactus Blossoms have done" - Nikki Miller, City Pages (Minneapolis)
"The Cactus Blossoms have quickly turned into the Twin Cities' most beloved new traditional-country act” - Chris Riemenschneider, Minneapolis Star Tribune
"Stunning debut [5 stars]” - Duncan Warwick, Country Music People (UK)
"... harkens back to the roots of country with their earnest songs and pristine harmonizing” - Chris Roberts, Minnesota Public Radio

Screamin' Jay Hawkins "At Home With Screamin' Jay Hawkins" 1958

The Halibuts "Life On The Bottom" 1996

While it would be easy enough to stuff the Halibuts into the retro surf-band file, a quick listen to this shows them to be a top-notch instrumental combo with a propensity for handling a diverse number of styles. While the reverb stun-gun attack of the guitars veers them into retro territory, their takes on Gershwin's "Summertime" and "Istanbul" make them a band with a little more to offer when you've overdosed on every cover version of "Misirlou" there is. - Cub Koda, All Music Guide
Too many of these modern instrumental surf acts try so hard to put a spin on their music that their music ends up suffering under the weight of their particular spin. Man or Astroman have some great tunes, but it's hard to hear them through the electronic noise and junk. The Blue Hawaiians made one good album ("Sway") and have sunk into a lounge-band hell lately. The Halibuts are the only guys with the guts to play instrumental surf music straight and to take their chances. There's no hypenization here: no "lounge-surf" or "electronic-surf" or the like. Just surf. And, much like the great surf LP's of yesteryear, the songs are only as good as their melodies and performances. Thankfully, the Halibuts uncork one great melody and performance after another. "Hammerhead," "Caldera," and the rest are fantastic songs. The Halibuts don't ape the old surf songs like Los Straitjackets do--they create new surf songs that are just as compelling and original as the best of their predecessors. - amazon
