The Lyres "A Promise Is A Promise" 1988 + "Baby" 1992 - 7"/45rpm

A Promise Is a Promise combines old, new, studio, and live material -- both original and covers -- from Boston's legendary garage rock combo. Tracks one through 12 were recorded in New York City, tracks 13 through 15 were recorded live at VPRO in Holland (before a radio audience), and track 16 was recorded live in Rennes, France. Despite the crazy quilt impression, it all hangs together surprisingly well as the performances are universally tight and energetic...
,,,Interestingly, there are two versions, both live and studio, of "She's Got Eyes That Tell Lies" by Him & the Others (there is no duplication otherwise). Other notable covers: "You'll Never Do It Baby" (the Pretty Things), "Running Through the Night" (the Mystic Tide), "Jagged Time Lapse" (John's Children, Marc Bolan's pre-T-Rex outfit), "Touch" (the Bristols) with Wally Tax, and "Witch" (the Sonics). Also worth noting: Stiv Bators (the Dead Boys) guests on the opening track, "Here's a Heart." The original Ace of Hearts CD and cassette editions drop "We Sell Soul" (from Roky Erickson's pre-Thirteenth Floor Elevators group, the Spades) and add "Jezebel" (Frankie Laine), "Go-Go-Girl" (Bolan), "Help You Ann" (from On Fyre), "Don't Give It Up Now" (from Lyres Lyres), and "Cinderella" (the Sonics). "Help You Ann" and "Don't Give It Up Now" are the only live versions that don't quite work: the former sounds rushed -- maybe they were already tired of playing it by this point -- and the latter is marred by a homophobic comment (about AIDS) from lead singer/keyboard player, Jeff "Monoman" Conolly. Thankfully, he sticks to the original lyrics for most of the rest of the live material. A Promise Is a Promise isn't the best starting point for the Lyres neophyte, but, for those who already know and love On Fyre and Lyres Lyres, it's a worthy addition to their collection. - by Kathleen C. By August 1979, the band has splintered, and Conolly would recruit guitarist Alex Kronos, bassist Scott Parmenter, and drummer Bob Mackenzie for live work. The Prisoners split in 1986 after four albums and the sadly inevitable music-industry-induced agony, but the Day / Crockford partnership didn’t stay dormant for long…
...After a stint as drummer for the Mighty Caesars with Chatham’s very own Renaissance man Billy Childish, Graham Day was re-joined by his old partner in 1989, along with ex-Daggerman Wolf Howard on drums, and formed the Prime Movers. Allan and Wolf had been part of the original line-up of the James Taylor Quartet (formed after the Prisoners split), but were now free agents. The Prime Movers recorded the raw and unpolished ‘Sins of the Fourfathers’ as a three piece, and were soon joined by Fay Hallam (ex Makin’ Time) on organ. Two subsequent albums followed but the band called it a day in 1993. - discogs

...Conolly saw DMZ play at a party and dug their sound, but Schwartz was soon bounced from the lineup for seeming too mannered. Seeing an opportunity, Conolly soon volunteered to take his place, and became their lead singer while also playing electric piano...
...DMZ (who briefly featured David Robinson on drums before he left to join the Cars) released an EP on the esteemed independent rock & roll label Bomp! Records in 1977, and Sire Records soon offered the band a major label deal. The Prisoners split in 1986 after four albums and the sadly inevitable music-industry-induced agony, but the Day / Crockford partnership didn’t stay dormant for long…
...After a stint as drummer for the Mighty Caesars with Chatham’s very own Renaissance man Billy Childish, Graham Day was re-joined by his old partner in 1989, along with ex-Daggerman Wolf Howard on drums, and formed the Prime Movers. Allan and Wolf had been part of the original line-up of the James Taylor Quartet (formed after the Prisoners split), but were now free agents. The Prime Movers recorded the raw and unpolished ‘Sins of the Fourfathers’ as a three piece, and were soon joined by Fay Hallam (ex Makin’ Time) on organ. Two subsequent albums followed but the band called it a day in 1993.

More emotionally complex and reflective than "On Fyre", this could well be one of the most mature garage rock records ever recorded. That doesn't mean that energy and excitement are sacrificed for dour introspection -- far from it. This is a total joy from start to finish, and a great place to hang out after a thousand or so spins of On Fyre.
"The Lyres were and are a band basically comprised of Jeff Conolly and anybody else he felt like playing music with for a while and then firing. He started out in Boston singing with punk/60's band DMZ in the mid-to-late '70's while working at local rib house Buzzy's Bar-B-Q. The band got signed to Sire Records during the initial post-punk/new wave upheavel, but their first and only release was horribly produced by Flo and Eddie of the Turtles(!) ("it sounded like their bellys were pushing up the bass drum faders and nothing else") and the band disintegrated shortly afterward. Jeff recruited a couple of the guys from DMZ and recorded a break-out single on Ace of Hearts Records, a local label founded by Richard W. Harte."

...Jeff Conolly was nicknamed "Monoman" partly because of his love of monophonic recordings of the '60s and in part because of his monomaniacal obsession with vintage rock & roll. He was born in Albany, New York, moved with his family to a town near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania when he was five, and at the age of ten, relocated to Darien, Connecticut. By the time he arrived in Darien, Conolly had already began playing keyboards and developed a taste for the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Paul Revere and the Raiders. Conolly fell in with a group of musically minded peers in his teens, and hoped to attend music school, but his parents had other ideas. In 1976, Conolly enrolled at Boston University, but he soon dropped out to play rock & roll. One of his friends at BU, Adam Schwartz, was singing in a band called DMZ, whose style blended raw '60s sounds with the speed and attitude of the burgeoning punk rock movement... to be continued - by Mark Deming

The Prisoners "WiserMiserDemelza" 1983 + "Electric Fit" 1983 (EP)

…one more of the most important Mod / Garage Beat Albums ever!!!
In the early 80s the Medway sound was born with a flurry of records from The Milkshakes and The Prisoners. The Prisoners produced a tough version of the sound of the 60s played with great enthusiasm and lots of GoGo. The Prisoners are the definitive psychedelic garage band, clearly influenced by the likes of the Small Faces, and cited as an influence for The Charlatans and -although not cited so openly- the entire brit pop and acid jazz scenes. Sixties/Garage/Psychedelic/Punk music with equally loud and up front guitar and keyboard sounds bursting with rawness. The band broke up in the late 80s after an ill-starred deal with Stiff Records. Drummer Johnny left the music business, guitarist Graham Day and bass player Allan Crockford had success with the mod band The Prime Movers, and the organist, JAMES TAYLOR formed his own ensemble and has enjoyed fame and success since then with his amazing THE JAMES TAYLOR QUARTET. This album was originally released on CD by Big Beat Records in 1990 and is a re-release of the 1983 vinyl album of the same name plus 7 bonus tracks recorded by the group and released on singles/compelations around 1984. TheWiserMiserDemelza (1983), which makes up the bulk of this double 10², was produced by one time Radiator, and ex-Pogue, Phillip Chevron. The ³plus 7² consists of the non-album flip of the single from the album alongside the 4 cuts from the 'Electric Fit' E.P., 'Reaching My Head' from the 'Four On 4' E.P. (a compilation from the T.V. programme The Tube), the rare song 'Coming Home' and a third 'Go Go' piece. Of the original album stuff, the track that leaps out and hits you where you get most pleasure is "Hurricane". "Unbeliever" is also great, and oh don't you just wish "Go Go" would get the full 3 minute treatment - Ah well!! Bonus tracks "Melanie", "Coming Home" and "Reaching My Head" are much treasured additions for the dedicated fan. Ted Kessler/Roger Sargent, NME (7 June '97): "The toughest and coolest platoon to ever emerge from this isle's only true punk outpost". "If you're a fan of either The Charlatans or Kula Shaker, then you owe your allegiance to these bands to The Prisoners because they invented them".
