"I've been reading these great books by Ned Sublette about the history of New Orleans and Cuba (see the Hound blog here : http://thehoundblog.blogspot.com/2009/09/ned-sublette.html) & getting interested in his idea of Cuban music as "The other great tradition" that largely gets ignored in discussing American music since the U.S cut off communication after the revolution in 1959. Digging into this I've put a few comps together (with plenty more to come)". - Johnny Q.

Impala "Square Jungle" 1995

Impala was the greatest, and easily the most underrated of the recent instrumental surf revival, and to me this is their greatest album. Slow, sensuous, sleazy sax over the fast pulse of a great rhythm section. Exotic, melodic guitar riffs instead of the usual tube-amp thrash that tries to pass itself off as surf these days. This album creates a beautifully sleazy, neon-lit pulsating world. My second favorite instramental album, next to (the)Ventures In Space! - By DrSpecter
Memphis' enigmatic emissaries of twang, IMPALA are back with their frenzied full-length follow-up to last years smokin' "Kings Of The Strip" ep...the "Square Jungle" LP/CD! This bourbon fueled bar burner features Twelve brand new all-instro meltdowns recorded by Mr. Roland James at the one and only Sam Phillips Recording Studios and runs the rails from sleek n' sultry sleaze-o-phonic saxophone work-outs to rough n' ready telecaster twistfests...each one sure to cause the bottles to tip and the sauce to flow. Be it low key or no key these cats score aces across the board for belting it out with more than enough flair ta spare! So remember, when the last blink of that rusty neon sign catches yer eye and some stormy snakecharmer's leading you from the doorstep of some smoky dive...you'd be wise ta have a copy of IMPALA "Square Jungle" waitin' on ice at the pad dad...dig? - Estrus

Katatonics "Operation Neptune" 2018

The Katatonics are a three piece surf rock band from Bloomington, Indiana, known for their energetic and reverb drenched instrumental guitar music...
...Formed in 2013 by Chris Hack they've been performing local venues and touring when possible. They have had several releases since their debut, including their first official EP 7" Swamp Terror, in 2017. In 2023 Katatonics released their self-titled album which received the Punk Rock Night of Indianapolis award for best local release. The latest single EP release "Panther in the Sky" has been released independently through the band's house studio KATBAT Records. This latest release reflects the most recent line up change, with Sam Pierce of the Swing Rays, on drums, Chirs Hack on guitar, and Mike Morgan on Bass. The Katatonics evoke vibes of classic surf from the early 60s while being refreshingly modern. Whether you're new to the surf music genre or a faithful fan of all the classics, The Katatonics continue to deliver the tunes. Currently working on a new full length LP set for a 2026 release. definitely stay tuned.

Spitwater "Medusa- A surfpunkjazz EP" 2023

Storm Surge of Reverb 2018: Spitwater is a sort of mad-scientist band, with every track employing surprising and interesting twists while their unique guitar sound gives off a noisy, rusty sorta sound.
... they’re great at concocting simple, accessible surf riffs as a backbone to all the strangeness. Every spitwater album is bursting with ideas...

Trashcan Records Vol 16 "Lowland Losers" Part 2

A killer collection of mostly uncomped rare Belgian and Dutch beat. Lots of obscurities here... two wild bubblegum groovers by Mike Verdrengh (written by 4PK's P. Koelewijn), frenzied garage by the Cousins, primitive R&R insanity by Le Twister Masqué, superb mod dance sounds by the Soul Finger Group & Les Baroques... and much more fairly 'unknown' delights!!!

Impala "Kings Of The Strip" 1995

These guys really put the pedal to the metal. The sounds of the days when a great little cheek was only a peck away.
In the wake of 1994's El Rancho Reverbo comes the Kings of the Strip EP. It's more instrumental surf rock from Memphis, more tradition-minded maybe than Man or Astro-man? but not without that added curl of punk spirit. Check the accelerated rave-up ending of "Incident on the 10th Floor," for example, or the furious reverb runs of "Hearse." The honking sax of "King Louie Stomp" is a great touch, as it moves Impala out of the somewhat static surf rock holding area and into something resembling R&B. And when the organ drops in on the whitecap, watch out. Other highlights include the film noir atmosphere of "Nothing More Than Murder," and "In Transit"'s cool mix of rumble and twang. Its rocking underbody suggests that Impala might not be lying about the Kings of the Strip boast. - by Johnny Loftus
Members:
Justin Thopson: sax, vox / John Stivers: guitar, organ / Scott Bomar: bass / Jeff Goggans: drums, bongos, tambourine, maracas

Katatonics "Katatonics / The Enstrangers Split" 2018

Spitwater "Neon Gray" 2022

Storm Surge of Reverb 2018: Spitwater is a sort of mad-scientist band, with every track employing surprising and interesting twists while their unique guitar sound gives off a noisy, rusty sorta sound.
... they’re great at concocting simple, accessible surf riffs as a backbone to all the strangeness. Every spitwater album is bursting with ideas...
