Manu Chao ? Manu Chao (real name José Manuel Tomás Arturo Chao),is a french nomadic, non-conformist, bard, born in Paris in 1961. His spanish family well known Gabriel Garcia Marquez. He learn classical piano, but with his brother began guitar and punk music, the explosive band created was The Mano Negra. A Mythical tour began with many others type of artists on a cargo ship or train around Colombia and South America. Next, Brasil, Africa, ... near eight years of touring.Then , Clandestino : a marvelous joyous fusion of latin, reggae, spanish and french songs.
For Uncut magazine : "Chao created a subversive, multi-lingual global party manifesto that gave voice to the dispossessed and soundtracked a brief but tangible moment of premillennial hope in which it seemed the world was progressively becoming a more tolerant place as we hurtled towards the year 2000. Sadly, times have instead grown darker. Yet if Clandestino captured a moment in time, Chao’s irresistible rhythms and message of resistance continue to sound fresh and vibrant a generation on".

"I had actually thought that I’d listened to this album last time, but after a quick check I discovered that last time it was the album ‘Próxima Estación: Esperanza’ at #474. To be fair, easy enough mistake to me. While his music is infectiously joyous and very danceable, it is often quite samey. And that goes from song-to-song and album-to-album. This record features the single, ‘Bongo Bong,’ a song I remember discovering on MTV back in 1998/1999. It was a song I had hunted down in the very early days of illegal file sharing and I listened to over and over in amongst my growing MP3 collection. Listen to it and try and not feel happy, I dare you!The album was recorded on a small laptop in various locations across the world and is a mix between Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, English and French. For those who think liking 50's Rockabilly makes you a racist, think again. Plenty of Black artists as well as White made Rockabilly in the 1950's "Big" Al Downing being one of the heavyweights. If anything its the opposite, Rockabilly was the first music that mixed Black Blues & R&B together with Country, making a new mixed sound for the Teenagers around the planet.
If you not heard Al Downings early Rockers you have missed out.

Today's front-page Louis Jordan post made me think of this disc I picked up in the '90s. These songs were re-recorded by Jordan in the late '50s. That's something I'm usually not a fan of, but I think the updated production values really adds to the music, and Jordan does just as good a job as he did on the originals. Since it was my first Jordan CD, it's all the original recordings that sound weird to me!
