Hello everybody,

In the recording details for the "Chronological Classics" collection, there are letters to indicate the instruments playing on each track. For example P (piano), G (guitar), TB (trombone), VN (violin), etc.

Does anyone know what instrument the letter A corresponds to?
And... BAR, BB, SB?
Thank you very much in advance,

Rockin' Silvia

@Rockin' Silvia - I think BAR = baritone sax, BB = brass bass (i.e. tuba or sousaphone), and SB = string bass.

Try this list,

Musical Instruments That Start With the Letter A
https://www.musicalmum.com/musical-instruments-that-start-with-the-letter-a/

I would think that for Jazz, 'Alto Sax' would be most likely.

Hello Susan Donimus. Thank you very much!

It's because of my limitations in English, as I'm from Spain, but I'm making my deductions :) You make me doubt when you tell me that BAR = Baritone Sax, because until now I thought that for instance TS = Tenor Sax and, therefore, that at the end of each type of sax there would be an S. It also seems strange to me that SB is String Bass. Because, for instance, until now (probably mistakenly) I thought that DB = Double Bass. So… String Bass = Double Bass?, or it could be… a cello, for example?

About the letter A, which is the one that drives me the most crazy, I have searched Wikipedia for one of the names of the musicians to which it is assigned, and now I am quite sure that the A corresponds to Arrangements. Yahoo!!! Unless you or someone here else tell me otherwise, of course, ha ha!

A greeting and thanks a lot. This blog is a pleasure in terms of the promoters and all the collaborators, and now that I'm on vacation and not traveling, I'm able to visit it a bit more frequently than usual.

Rockin' Silvia

One way of solving the letter key mystery might be to google the name of the person next to it. If that person is known to have been an alto sax player then it can be a safe bet that "A" is for alto sax, although using "AS" would be more logical.

@Rockin' Silvia - In English, the same instrument can be called "string bass", "double bass", "contrabass", "bass viol", "bull fiddle", or just "bass". In a big band context, where string bass and tuba would fill the same role and maybe even be played by the same person, they're likely to be abbreviated sb and bb. In the context of a small jazz combo, where you wouldn't expect a tuba, a string bass might be abbreviated simply as b. The closer you get to a rock context, the more likely it is that b (or bs) would refer to an electric bass, and string bass would be abbreviated as sb.

As for saxes, yes, ss, as, and ts are the usual ways of abbreviating soprano sax, alto sax, and tenor sax. But the problem is that the next two Eb/Bb saxes are baritone sax and bass sax, either of which could be abbreviated bs. In the 1920s, bass sax may have been more widely used than baritone sax. After the early 1930s, bass sax was rarely used, so you're more likely to see bs for baritone sax. But if you wanted a set of standard abbreviations to use in many different contexts, it would make sense to avoid an ambiguous abbreviation like bs.

A classic example of confusion caused by ambiguous abbreviations is Batman & Robin (1966) by The Sensational Guitars Of Dan & Dale. This Tom Wilson production featured members of Sun Ra's Arkestra and Blues Project. The original LP had no musician credits. On the back cover of the reissue, both Pat Patrick (of Arkestra) and Andy Kulberg (of Blues Project) are credited for bass. Why would Wilson have enlisted two bass players? Anyway, it's well known that Pat Patrick was a baritone sax player. Whoever compiled the credits for the CD was presumably a rock guy who consulted a jazz discography and misinterpreted bs as standing for bass.
