THE CHARLATANS
Although they rarely get the credit they deserve, The Charlatans were one of the first San Francisco bands to embrace the psychedelic lifestyle, both musically and personally, even known to drop acid sometimes before taking the stage. They adopted a Wild West image and incorporated old timey music from traditional jazz, jug bands, and vaudevillian barroom honky tonk with contemporary psychedelic garage pop and guitar-driven country rock into an experience that still hasn’t been duplicated today. The most recognizable member would probably be Dan Hicks, who’d later form His Hot Licks with fellow Charlatan, Terry Wilson. Despite a solid five-year run and a far-reaching reputation for throwing wild rockin’ live shows, they only produced one official album in their lifetime, coming toward the end of their spirited reign. The compilation gathers everything else they’d done in the studio, including non-album sides, demos, studio outtakes, and even an advertisement where they wrote alternate “sales-pitch” lyrics to their popular song “Alabama Bound”. In 1997 they reunited for an anniversary performance at The Fillmore Auditorium, the live show shared below was recorded during a practice gig for that show, and was released in this edited form earlier this year.

THE CYRKLE
A classic but short-lived sunshine beat pop band with mild psychedelic tendencies, their hits “Red Rubber Ball” and “Turn-Down Day” are still staples of oldies radio. Even with their catchy infectious melodies, their biggest advantage was probably their fortuitous connections within the music industry: they were discovered in 1965 by none other than Brian Epstein, who ended up being their manager; he gave them their name, along with the alternate spelling suggested by John Lennon himself. They opened for The Beatles on 14 of 17 US dates on The Fab Four’s final North American tour in 1966, making a virtual household name out of The Cyrkle overnight. However, despite two smash hits and one gold record from their first album, their follow-up quietly came and went among what had become a sea of flower-psych jangle-pop bands; they released several singles but none of them became hits. The Minx soundtrack was recorded in 1967 when production on the underground x-rated movie began, but wasn’t released until the film broke in 1970 and the band was long-since dissolved. It was widely considered their “lost album” until this reissue came about, as it develops some of their most interesting material with soul-psych instrumentals and multi-harmonious vocal pop gems.

LoFi Larry, thanks you so much for the Charlatans. I only had the compilation but at a lower bitrate. It's a shame there is so little recorded output from them so anything is really appreciated.

Billy K, today I listened to your comp. Very interesting and truly unique. I enjoyed it and want to thank you again for the song/artist titles.

Wow, you are doing really well! I'm a big doowop guy, and I love the Bellfuries- just saw them in Rochester, NY recently. That was my favorite CD of theirs- more than the latest or Palmyra.
I believe there is another Thanks again!
